SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS - NEW STADIUM

/Update+plans+downtown+Regina+domed+stadium+coming+Enterprise+Minister+Cheveldayoff/3058191/story.html#ixzz0objbaUgT

REGINA, Saskatchewan
— The idea of a new domed stadium in downtown Regina is receiving "good support" from across the province, Enterprise Minister Ken Cheveldayoff says.

But word on whether the approximately $400-million project will actually proceed beyond the idea stage — and who might pay the construction costs if it does — won't come until late next month.

"I continue to believe that it's a generational opportunity here that we have to look at very, very closely and I look forward, now that the session is finished, to devote even more time to this file and to ensure that we have all the information going forward," Cheveldayoff said in an interview this week at the close of the 10-week spring legislative session.

A feasibility study funded by all three levels of government and the Saskatchewan Roughriders stated that construction of a 33,000-seat covered stadium could cost about $386 million, or $431 million if the roof was retractable. While the report projected the stadium could have an annual cash operating surplus, it said capital grants from funding partners or "alternative revenue streams" would be required to cover the initial construction.

Work over the last few months has included discussion how such a project could be financed, Cheveldayoff said.

"The capital accumulation phase is to get a read from the different partners and the different prospective partners out there and see what they would be able to contribute to the facility itself," he said.

Premier Brad Wall has in the past indicated that there must be federal government involvement if a potential new domed stadium is to proceed.

Regina Qu'Appelle Conservative MP Andrew Scheer said Friday that he has heard from constituents who are excited about the possibility of a new stadium, but added that many people are also insistent that the private sector needs to play a big role so taxpayers aren't unduly burdened.

The Sask. Party government is itself pledging not to fund a stadium through its general revenue fund, and is instead pointing to a possibilities such as a partnership with the two provincially owned casinos.

There have been discussions with Canadian Pacific Railway, which has the land where the stadium could be built, as well as "various private sector interests," said Cheveldayoff, who expects to update the public in about one month.

"I don't know exactly where we'll be at that time but I think that's a period of time where we want to let everybody know where things are at and how far along we have gone," he said.

2010 - IIHF CHAMPIONSHIP - RUSSIA DEFEATS CANADA 5-2

Hockey Canada.ca

Russia 5 - Canada 2

CANADA CRUSHED BY RUSSIA 5-2 AT WORLDS; FIRST EXIT IN QUARTER FINALS SINCE 2002

COLOGNE, Germany ‑ A forgettable IIHF World Hockey Championship for Canada ended with a crushing 5-2 quarter-final loss to Russia on Thursday.

It's the third straight year Russia ended Canada's gold-medal hopes at the tournament and this loss came a long way from the final. A young Canadian squad dropped four of its final five games and failed to get past the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.

The Canadians entered as heavy underdogs to a powerhouse Russian team that featured 14 of the players who competed at the Vancouver Olympics. Corey Perry was the lone gold-medal winner from those Games to make the trip here for Canada.

Despite the gap in skill and experience, the hard-fought game wasn't as lopsided as the score suggested.

Evgeni Malkin, with two, Maxim Afinogenov, Pavel Datsyuk and Sergei Fedorov - all Olympians - scored goals for Russia (6-0), which extended its world championship winning streak to 26 games.

John Tavares and Matt Duchene replied for Canada (3-4).

Mark Messier's team struggled to generate offence in its biggest games. Canada scored just five times in its four losses, putting a lot of pressure on top goaltender Chris Mason in the process.

However, Mason also played a part in the team's struggles by allowing some soft untimely goals.

That could be seen against Russia when Afinogenov opened the scoring with 57.6 seconds to play in the first period with a shot that dribbled through Mason's arm and across the goal-line. Until that point, Canada had done an excellent job weathering the storm in a charged atmosphere at Lanxess Arena.

The team temporarily lost its composure after going down 1-0 and Steven Stamkos took a boarding penalty as the buzzer sounded for the first intermission.
Datsyuk made Canada pay with a goal on the ensuing power play, lifting a shot over Mason from a tight angle at 1:45 of the second period.

The Canadians were getting their chances at the other end but simply couldn't get a puck behind Semyon Varlamov. The Russian goaltender extended his glove to stop Stamkos before getting in front of Steve Downie's shot at the end of a 3-on-1 rush for Canada.

Malkin made it 3-0 on another Russian power play. The sniper took a pass in the slot and beat Mason through the legs at 17:31.

A physical game started to turn chippy and the second period ended with a scrum that saw players exchanging punches. When the same thing happened in the final 20 minutes, the referees started assessing 10-minute misconducts to offenders.

Fedorov put Russia ahead 4-0 at 7:31 of the third period before Tavares ended Varlamov's shutout bid at 13:52, scoring his team-best seventh goal of the tournament with a wicked shot off the rush. Malkin scored into an empty net before Duchene struck late.

Tavares and Duchene are among the young players that Hockey Canada invited to this tournament in hopes that they'll benefit from the experience four years from now during the Sochi Olympics. Only time will tell if the strategy pays off.

For the powerful Russians, Thursday's win offered a little bit of revenge for the 7-3 quarter-final loss they absorbed from Canada in Vancouver. However, as Russian captain Ilya Kovalchuk pointed out before the game, the memory of that defeat will linger until the 2014 Olympics.

2010 - MEMORIAL CUP - WINDSOR WINS SECOND GAME - AGAINST CALGARY 6-2

By: Ron C. Johnston

Brandon, Manitoba - Westman Place Rink - Windsor has a total of 11 returnees from the last year's Memorial Cup Championship. Windsor's Taylor Hall's two goals helped last year's Memorial Cup Champions defeat the (WHL) Champion Calgary Hitmen 6-2. For the second game in a row, Windsor got off to a fast start scoring two quick goals at the start of the game. Brandon's attendance was announced as 5,201 and saw Windsor score 3 goals in the final period to put the game away and give Windsor a berth in the finals.

A turnover at the left of Calgary's net had Eric Wellwood passing to the front of the net where Dale Mitchell scored at 2:38. Windsor went up 2-0 as Cam Fowler carried the puck from centre ice down the left boards where he passed to Taylor Hall who scored from the left face-off-circle at 3:55. With 5:30 left in the period, Windsor's net minder Grubower made 2 close in back-to-back saves to help his team take the lead into the second period.

Windsor went up 3-0 when Taylor Hall passed a back hand to Justin Shugg who scored below the left face-off circle at 8:15, also assisted by Cam Fowler. Calgary got on the score sheet by scoring 2 goals within 3 minutes. The first had Kris Foucault passing from the left boards to Jimmy Bubnick who was parked in front of the net and scored at 11:43. Calgary closed the score to 3-2 with Ian Schultz fighting for the puck at the boards. He carried it out and passed to Bubnick in front of the net and scored at 14:56. Windsor had 2 golden opportunities to score. With 4:40 left in the period, Gregg Nemiz hit both goal posts then Scott Timmons, with only 41 seconds remaining, shot the puck off the crossbar.

Windsor went up 4-2 with only 12 seconds gone in the third period. Right from the starting face-off, a costly turnover at Calgary's blue line had Taylor Hall skating on a break-a-way and scoring on a back hand. With 3:30 gone in the period, Calgary's Hyren cleared a loose puck sitting on the goal crease. Then with 9:32 gone, Calgary's Misha Fisenko hit the left post. Windsor put the game out of reach with Nemiz doing some strong fighting and handling of the puck behind Calgary's net for approximately 25 seconds then passed to Kenny Ryan at the right post who shot the puck up over Calgary's goalie Jones' left shoulder at 16:56, also assisted by Zack Kassian. At 19:19 Adam Wallace scored into an open net, assisted by Stephen Johnston.

THE MONDAY MORNING GOALIE

Parts taken from Rod's Monday Morning Goalie - Monday, May 17, 2010

The nation's newest sports talk radio program is hosted by yours truly and debuts today from 4:00pm - 6:00 pm on 620 and will air Monday to Friday year-round.

With the (birth of his new show - two hours in the afternoon) comes the end of my tenure as Voice of the Regina Pats Hockey Club, and play-by-play man in the Western Hockey League. That treasured part of my career included 17 seasons and 1328 broadcasts for the Pats, Prince Albert Raiders and Lethbridge Hurricanes.

I feel the reasons behind this announcement are best left between the Pats and me. However suffice it to say that I was informed by the club some months ago that our current arrangement (of me calling both Roughriders and Pats games) "isn't working".

The team feels it may be best for their brand identity to have "their own" play-by-play man and although that opportunity was offered to me, it's not one I will be taking.

The split is amicable, and I feel I can provide lots of support for the club through this new sports talk show.

I'd like to take this time to thank the Regina Pats for all the great memories and opportunities they've afforded me.

********************************************************************************

Rod, sorry to see you step down from broadcasting Regina Pats Hockey games but wish you all the best in your new Show.

2010 - CANADIAN - MEMORIAL CUP - BRANDON SHOUT OUTS MONCTON 4-0

by: Ron C. Johnston

Brandon, Manitoba - Westman Place Rink - Before an attendance of 5,215, it was a different Brandon team, Sunday, as they showed a much better performance. Brandon's goaltender Jacobe DeSaars made 31 saves in picking up the shut out. Toni Rajala was Brandon's top player in scoring two goals.

The only goal in the first period had Aaron Lewdaruk carry the puck from his own blue line down the left boards and pass to Toni Rajal who back handed the puck into the net at the 10:14 mark, also assisted by Fehr. With only 6:35 left in the period, a Brandon player shot the puck off the left post and with 4:24 left, Moncton's Ted Stephens had a partial break-a-way only to be stopped. At the end of the first period both teams had 11 shots apiece.

Brandon came out flying, as they had 5 shot in the first 5 minutes of the period. At the 5:23 mark Brandon's goaltender Jacob DeSaars made a spectacular save. Approximately 3 minutes later Brandon went up 2-0 on Toni Rajala's second goal. Brodie Melnychuk took a long shot, that bounced of the back boards to the right side of the net, which Rajala scored at 8:17. Just over two minutes later Brandon's Wiebe at the left side of the net passed to Brayden Schenn at the right corner of the net, who scored at 12:19, also assisted by MattCalvert.

With 5:23 left in the period, Brandon's Matt Calvert hit the top of the cross bar, then with 4:00 left Brandon had a 3 on 1 break, only to shot a miss the net. Moncton came right back down the ice with a 2 on 1 break, only to have Kelsy Tessier hit the right side of the net.

Brandon's Brent Radeke close the scoring on a 2 on 1 rush. Shayne Wiebe passed from the left of the net to Radeke who was at the right side of the net ans scored at 2:24, also assisted by Darren Bestland.

2010 - IIHF CHAMPIONSHIP - SWEDEN DOWNS CANADA 3-1

MANNHEIM, Germany - Canada is playing with fire at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Jonas Andersson scored goals 2:54 apart Sunday as Sweden beat Canada 3-1, leaving open the possibility of a quarter-final date with the powerhouse Russians.

Johan Harju also had a goal for Sweden (4-1), which can't see the two-time defending champions before the semifinals.

Brooks Laich replied for Canada (3-2).

These teams have faced one another in the semifinals at this tournament for four straight years, with Canada winning the last three after Sweden came out on top in 2006.

The road to this year's semifinal for Canada will likely end up going through the Russians if it isn't able to beat the Czech Republic in its final round robin game on Tuesday.

2010 MEMORIAL CUP - CALGARY COMES FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT MONCTON 5-4

By: Ron C. Johnston

Brandon, Manitoba - Westman Place Arena - Before a crowd of 5,123, Calgary scored 3 goals in just less than 4 minutes and 30 seconds in the later part of the third period to win 5-4 over Moncton. Moncton took a 3-0 lead before Calgary started to fight back. Moncton's top scorer was Alex Saulnier with 2 goals. For Calgary it was Tyler Shattlock assisting on the tying goal and scoring the winner.

The opening goal was a strange one. A Moncton player shot the puck out from the left corner in front of the net and was directed by a Calgary defender into his own net. Devon MacAusland was credited with the goal at 9:53. Calgary was badly out played in the first period, being out shot 13-3. In the last minute of the period Calgary's goaltender Martin Jones made 2 outstanding saves back-to-back.

In the second period Moncton made a pretty 3 way pass, Randy Cameron passing to Brandon Gormley at the left side of the blue line who passed to David Savard at the right side of the blue line. Savard skated into the top of the face-off circle and took a long shot and scored at 7:42. Near the mid point Calgary was on a power play and Moncton's goalie made 2 back-to-back close in saves. Moncton's Daniel Pattersen passed to Alex Saulnier behind the net and Saulnier carried the puck out the right side and scored at 14:11, also assisted by Ted Stephens. Calgary finally got on the score board near the end of the period. Del Cowan, at the left side of the blue line, passed to Tyler Fiddler at the right side face-off circle and scored at 18:52.

In the third period, Calgary came out flying, had 2 close in shots stopped by Moncton's goalie Nicola Riopel in the first minute of the period. Calgary's Ian Schultz received a pass from Zak Stebner at centre ice and carried the puck down the right boards and passed to trailing Joel Broda who scored at 3:08. Then it was end-to-end hockey until Monction scored on a power play. Alex Saulnier's second goal carried the puck from the right side of the net out in front of the net and scored at 8:48, assisted by Stephens and Savard. Then it was all Calgary.

Just inside the left blue line, Joel Broda passed to Giffen Nyren who took a long shot from the right side of the blue line at 14:15, also assisted by Michael Stone. The tying goal was a strange one. Kris Foucalt shot the puck which hit the right post, then it went off Moncton's goaltender's pad, off the goaltender's stick, and into the net at 16:29, assisted by Bubnick and Tyler Shattlock. The final goal was also a strange goal. In the right corner, Shattlock shot the puck behind the net around the boards and it bounced onto the goaltender. The puck dropped right in front of him. In the meanwhile, Shattlock was skating around behind the net and coming out on the left side of the it. All he had to do was poke the loose puck into the net, past the surprising netminder Nicola Riopel, for the winning goal at 18:42, assisted by Bubnick.

2010 MEMORIAL CUP - IN THE OPENING GAME - WINDSOR SPITFIRES SKATE TO AN EASY 9-3 VICTORY OVER BRANDON

By: Ron C. Johnston

Brandon, Manitoba - Western Place Rink - Before an attendance of 5,381, the game was all over in the first five minutes as Windsor scored 4 goals in 2:44 minutes. The turning point may have been a hit by Brandon's Harmonic, 30 seconds into the game. It was a hard check to the left shoulder that had Windsor's Hall going head first into the right boards behind Brandon's goal. It was a big surprise to see Hall come back the next shift.

Turnovers hurt Brandon. The first goal had Windsor's Zack Kaisian get a turnover at the centre ice and skate down the left boards then cut towards the net. Kaisian passed across the goal crease and Kenny Ryan scored at 2:01, also assisted by Greg Nemisz. Once again, a turnover at centre ice and Dale Mitchell passed to Scott Timmins who scored on the right side of the net at 3:25. Mark Cundari passed to Adam Henrique who scored on a long hard shot from the left face-off circle at 4:27. Another bad turnover by Brandon. Taylor Hall picks up a loose puck at the left blue line and skates right in scoring a back hand at the right side of the net at 4:45, assisted by Cundari and Henrique. Hall finished the scoring in the first period when he scored at the right side of the net on a rebound by Cam Fowler at 18:23, also assisted by Justin Shugg. It was Windsor 5-0 as they out shot Brandon 23-9 after the first period.

In the second period, Windsor's Adam Henrique scored on a long left side face-off circle shot at 1:15, assisted by Shugg. Windsor went up 8-0 when Marc Cantin skated in from the left and passed to Eric Wellwood who skated down the left boards and behind the net where he passed to Scott Timmins who scored at 6:47. Windsor's Dale Mitchell scored at 14:49, assisted by Wellwood and Timmins. Brandon's Aaron Lewadniuk scored into an open net at the right side of the net at 14:57, assisted by Toni Rajala. Windsor finished the scoring as Zack Kassian scored from the left side of the net at 16:21, assisted by Greg Nemisz and Dale Mitchell. It was Windsor 9-1 going into the third period.

The only goals scored in the third period were by Brandon. Matt Calvert scored from the left side of the net 25 seconds into the period, assisted by Brayden Schenn and Scott Gennie. The second goal was by Jay Fehr scoring from in front of the net at 13:28, assisted by Lewadiuk and Rajala.

2010 - IIHF CHAMPIONSHIP - CANADA SKATES TO A 12-1 VICTORY OVER NORWAY

(Photo: TSN.ca - Evander Kane and Rich Peverley)

by Ron C. Johnston

Mannheim Germany, (Sap Arena) - It was Ex-Regina Pat's Jordan Eberle, who will be celebrating his 20th birthday tomorrow. As an alternate player who was allowed to play in today's game, Eberle scored a goal and got 4 assists. (His 4 assists in the second period tied a Canada record for most points in a period at the World Championships). It should have been two goals. At about the 6 minute mark of the first period, Eberle had scored only to have the goal disallowed due to a quick whistle by the referee. The goalie never did have control of the puck.

Canada's John Tavares had a hat trick, while Evander Kane netted a pair of goals. Matt Duchene, Jordan Eberle, Ray Whitney, Steve Downie, Rich Peverley, Corey Perry, and Marc Giordano added singles. Ex-Regina Pats JordanEberle added four assists for a five-point day.

It was Norway's Jonas Holos scoring just inside the right face-off circle at the 1:35 mark. Canada finally got on the score board when Evander Kane scored a backhand rebound shot in front of the net at 13:09, assisted by Jordan Eberle and Mark Staal. The score was 1-1 after the first period.

It was all Canada in the second period as they scored 7 goals. Canada set a team record for the fastest six goals at a world championship when it scored six times in just 6:36 during the second period.

It started with Ray Whitney shooting a hard shot from the left point. Corey Perry scored as he tipped it in at the left side of the net at 3:51, also assisted by Kris Russell. Marke Giordano scored the next goal at 13:12, a shot from the slot, assisted by Jordan Eberle who passed to Matt Duchene. Duchene took the puck to the net and passed to the trailing defenceman. John Tarvares scored his first of three goals, a power play that rolled in off a Norway defenceman's stick at 16:42. Canada went up 5-1 on Rick Peverley's hard shot at the left side of the blue line that went up into the upper net at 17:27. Canada then scored on a 2 on 1 rush as Steve Downey scored at the right side of the net at 18:16. He received a pass from the left boards by Steve Ott. Canada then had a 5 on 3 power play and Ray Whitney scored under the crossbar as he shot from just inside the left blue line at 19:06. Canada scored their last goal when Jordan Eberle, at the left side of the goal, made a goal crease pass to Evander Kane at the right side of the net and tipped the puck in at 19:48, also assisted by Rick Peverley. It was Canada 8-1 going into the third period.

An early goal at 39 seconds into the period had Jordan Eberle skate from behind the left side of the net, stop, slowly skated across in front of the net where he shot just inside of the right post. Tarvares scored his second goal as he skated toward the front of the net and tipped in a pass at 5:57, assisted by Corey Perry. It was Canada 10-1. Tarvares got his hat trick, parked at the left side of the net where he received a blue line pass from Brent Burns at 9:18. The final goal was a pretty one as Matt Duchene walked out from the right side of the net, stopped, spun around, and scored into the right corner of the net at 10:18.

(Photo: TSN.ca - Canadian Press)

By: Ron C. Johnston

2010 - IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - CANADA DEFEATS ITALY 5-1

(Photo: TSN.ca)

By Ron C. Johnston

MANNHEIM, Germany - The Canadians had 17 first timers (averaging 22 years, 4 months). Although playing with a young team, they played well enough to upset #16 ranked Italy 5-1 at Sap Arena.

The team only had the chance to play together in the past week for the first time and came out of the first period ahead 2-1. The Canadians opened the scoring when Steven Stamkos carried the puck around behind the net and passed from the left side of the net to Corey Perry who was parked just to the right, in front of the net, and tipped in the puck at the 2:43 mark. Italy tied the game when Michele Strazzabosco rifled a hard shot from the right point of a face-off win at 12:44. With only 48 seconds remaining in the first period, Ray Whitney (the oldest player on the team who was celebrating his 38th birthday) passed from the right point to Kris Russell who scored at the left side of the net.

It was all Canada from then on. Matthew Duchene received a pass from Ray Whitney and scored on a hard long screen shot from the left point at 5:57. Just less then 5 minutes later it was Duchene passing out from behind the left side of the net to Steven Stamkos who tipped in the puck at the left post on a delayed penalty at 10:37. The Canadians took a 4-1 lead going into the third period.

Italy changed goalies for the final period, putting in Bellismo who held the Canadians off the score board until near the end of the game when Rene Bourque carried the puck out from the right boards to the right face-off circle and scored on a long shot.

GENERAL MANAGER - MARK MESSIER SKATES WITH CANADA PLAYERS AT IIHF CHAMPIONSHIP WARM-UP

Some things haven't changed for Mark Messier. The 49-year-old general manager of Canada's world championship team strapped on the skates Thursday and went through drills with 12 of his players during an optional practice.

(Photo: The Canadian Press)

Full Story.

MANNHEIM, Germany -- Some things haven't changed for Mark Messier.

The 49-year-old general manager of Canada's world championship team strapped on the skates Thursday and went through drills with 12 of his players during an optional practice. The Moose looked pretty good on the ice and showed flashes of his former self by catching coach Craig MacTavish with a bit of an elbow -- something he later claimed was inadvertent.

"They are always accidental," Messier said with a laugh.

The GM is clearly taking a hands-on approach with one of the youngest teams Canada has ever sent to the world championship tournament. Messier has been spending a lot of time in the locker-room during the run-up to the event and was even helping lift equipment as the team made the move to Mannheim after a training camp in Hamburg, Germany.

His presence is certainly being felt.

"It was awesome having him out there," said veteran forward Ryan Smyth, back for his eighth world championship. "He's left a legacy not only in the NHL, but in Team Canada's organization. It's nice to see him around. You know, he puts smiles on the guys' faces. He's in there just like one of the boys -- chatting away and making everyone feel comfortable."

That job is especially important with six players on the roster who are 20 and under. Canada will be leaning heavily on its young players as it attempts to win the world championship for the first time since 2007.

The mood around the team seemed extremely upbeat as it arrived at SAP Arena for the first time.

Canada opens the event there with a game against Italy on Saturday (TSN, 10:15 a.m. ET) and will remain in Mannheim until the tournament shifts to Cologne for the playoff round.

Several of the players took some time to look around their new dressing room, with many stopping to examine the wall that features photos from each of the 24 Canadian teams that have won the world championship. It brought back some good memories for Smyth, who captured back-to-back gold medals in 2003 and 2004.

"There's a few of them (with me) up there, which is awesome," said Smyth. "This is the first time we've been down here and looked around. To walk into our room, it's special to see the history that Team Canada has developed over the years."

The goal is quite clear for the 2010 squad: They want to put their picture on the next championship wall.

"That would be it for sure," said Smyth. "We put high expectations on ourselves, but we know that every country is tough and they play hard against the Canadians. We've got to make sure that we're on top of our game."

Even though it's been six years since he stepped away from the NHL, Messier still looked pretty good during Thursday's practice. He's been on the ice a fair bit over the last year for various events and says he feels comfortable on skates.

It helps that he continued to place a priority on fitness after retiring.

"I try to work out at least four times a week," said Messier. "It's basically the same routine I did when I was playing, but probably half of the effort. I like to work out, I feel much better. I think it's important for your overall mental well-being and emotionally as well."

Before joining the team for practice, he made sure he wasn't breaking Hockey Canada protocol and was told that Lanny MacDonald did the same thing when he was Canada's GM.

Messier knows the team's success will be dictated by how quickly the players become a cohesive unit and wants to help the process along. Plus, he enjoyed himself.

"It was nice to get a little exercise and get rid of some of the jet lag," said Messier. "It was a good opportunity ... to get to know the guys a little bit better as well and spend some time with them in a little more of a relaxed atmosphere. It was great."

And he wanted to make it clear that no one needs to worry about losing a roster spot so he can make a comeback.

"They're all safe," said Messier.
