REGINA PATS - ALUMNI WIN THIRD STRAIGHT OVER MOOSE JAW - 7-4 IN TRANS CANADA CLASH

GAME SUMMARY: By: Ron "Scoreboard" Johnston - Just prior to the pre-game warm up, I spoke to the team telling them that I had received a letter from the oldest Regina Pats Alumni (Murray Armstrong). I told the team that, in previous conversation with Mr. Armstrong, I learned he was 94 years old, living in Florida, almost blind but plays 18 holes of golf each week, and that he and his wife will be celebrating their 67th wedding anniversary in March. I finished saying that I would like them to dedicate this game to him.

The victory 7-4 improved the Pats' record to 3-0 all-time in alumni contests between junior hockey's top rivals. The paid attendance was announced as 2,578 (a sell out) in the Crushed Can. Moose Jaw went along with a three goalie system: Scott Christison played in the first period, Josh Lepp the second period and Glen Seymour the third period. For Regina it was Houk for the first half of the game and Shaun Fleming for the second half. The game opened with three quick goals within two minutes early in the first period as the two teams went into the second period tied 2-2. Moose Jaw scored back-to-back goals with just over one minute to take a 2-0 lead. Warrior Alumni's Darry LaPlante scored on a soft goal right in front of the net at 3:22, assisted by Jeremy Thompson. The second goal had Rob Harvey score on a rebound at 4:32, assisted by Blair Atcheynum.

Regina came right back as Nevin Markwart scored a real strange goal. He shot from the right corner, hit goalie Christison and just trickled over the goal line at 5:24. Regina tied the contest as Brandon Coates scored a shorthanded goal when he picked-up a loose puck and scored on a break-a-way, a low shot at 16:18. In the first period Regina outshot Moose Jaw 15-10. I kept my own record on shots as I noticed whoever did them did not even count Regina's first two shots on goal.

In the second period Regina went up 5-2 as Kurt Wickenheiser scored from the left corner at 1:43, assisted by Kyle Deck and Mike Kirby. Then Nevin Markwart scored his second goal of the game as he came in from the left boards and scored at 11:04, assisted by Chris Anderson and Troy Vollhoffer. The next goal was a beauty, a three way pass that was tipped in from the right side of the net (I was not able to get the players names as the announcing system was terrible, very hard to hear), I believe it was Jamie Heward. Then it was Moose Jaw's turn, scoring two quick goals. The first being a weak shot by Jeff Budai at 14:13, assisted by Kevin Masters. Sounded like the announcer gave the time for the next goal as being 14:19, (I know that was wrong). Roy Edwards scored on a break-a-way from the blue line and deaked Fleming. It was Regina 5-4 going into the final period. In the second period, Regina once again outshot Moose Jaw 15-10.

In the third period Regina scored a power play goal by Brian Varga which was a hard shot at 2:15, assisted by Gord Wappel and Mike Kirby. The final goal had Kirby coming in from the left boards into the front of the net, as he made a nice deak to the right corner at 15:27 assisted by Troy Vollhoffer.

- "Warmup's 18 minutes long but you don't have to stay out there for the whole 18 minutes." - Regina coach Al Dumba in his pregame speech.

- "Sillinger and I both have titanium hips. I hope if we skate beside each other, we don't stick together like magnets!" - Linesman Dallas Davison.

- "Are you the team bus driver?" - A security guard to Mitchell Blair under the stands in the Civic Centre.

- "I wouldn't miss this for the world." - Rider legend Roger Aldag before the game.

- "Kevin Gallant will be happy we lost. I read your blog." - Warriors forward Troy Edwards.

PATS ARE HEADING INTO A BLIZZARD OF GAMES

By: Greg Harder, Regina Leader-Post Sports

January 26, 2010

Regina Pats heading into a blizzard of games

REGINA, Saskatchewan — The Regina Pats weathered a major storm on the weekend, but there’s another one on the horizon.

Having enjoyed a relatively light schedule as of late, the WHL club is about to begin a hectic stretch of 10 games in 16 days. It begins Friday when the Moose Jaw Warriors visit Regina for the first half of a key home-and-home series which concludes Saturday night at the Crushed Can.

The Pats have played some of their best hockey in the New Year, but there's still little room for error as they sit six points out of an Eastern Conference playoff spot with only 22 games remaining.

“We have this big mountain to climb — and we’re still climbing,” offered Pats head coach Curtis Hunt. “But it’s the same as before. It’s one game at a time. We try not to think too far ahead and try to keep the kids in the present.”

That approach has worked pretty well so far, helping Regina post a 6-1-0-1 record so far in 2010. The WHL club has also picked up at least a point in six straight games (5-0-0-1), its longest streak of the campaign. That includes back-to-back victories over the Swift Current Broncos on the weekend.

Following a 5-2 win on Saturday, the Pats were forced to spend the night in Swift Current due to blizzard conditions which had also caused a power outage that delayed the game for more than an hour.

Despite difficult travel conditions, the team eventually made it home on Sunday afternoon, only to learn that its third game in three nights had been postponed because the Kootenay Ice couldn’t make it into Regina due to road closures.

As a result, the Pats gained a day off in the short term but will endure a tougher schedule in the long term. Faced with few viable options for a make-up date, the game against Kootenay was rescheduled for Feb. 1, even though Mondays are typically off limits. With that addition to the schedule, the Pats and Ice will both be in the midst of a six-game, nine-day stretch.

“We’ll communicate with our training staff in terms of fatigue,” said Hunt. “I try to be real open. I talked to some of my veterans (Tuesday) about how they’re feeling and the schedule and where they’re at mentally. They all feel very positive about the energy and their mindset. As we play, we’ll assess (the situation) and make decisions as they need to be made.”

One advantage for Regina is the fact that the team's injured list has dwindled to zero. It’s the first time since early November that Hunt has had the entire roster at his disposal.

“We are healthy — knock on wood,” he said. “We had a tough weekend. I thought Swift Current really ran at us, especially in Swift Current, and came at us hard. We got through that game, responded well and came out of it as healthy as we went into it.

“I don’t want to talk about it too much because you know how that goes (with injury superstitions),” he added with a laugh. “But, yeah, considering some of the schedules that our guys have had (due to injuries and international assignments) and how much we were forced to use some other guys throughout a tough December, the fact that we’re healthy is important. It’s part of the whole big (picture). You need to be healthy — that’s everybody, but especially your key players — to have success.”

QUEBEC LEAGUE COMMISSIONER - DISCUSSES CORMIER'S SUSPENSION

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League commissioner Gilles Courteau joined Michael Landsberg on Off The Record on Monday to discuss the season-long suspension that was assessed to Patrice Cormier of Rouyn-Noranda.

Landsberg asked Courteau how the league came to a decision on the final length of the suspension.

"What we've seen on the ice through video, it's unacceptable for us at the QMJHL, and this is something that we don't want to see happen," said Courteau. "Even if it's an isolated incident, it was a severe elbow from Patrice Cormier to Mikael Tam's head. It was serious what happened on the ice after the fact, with (Tam's) convulsions, which was the main reason our Disciplinary Prefect, Raymond Bolduc, came up with that decision."

Patrick Roy, the head coach and general manager of the Quebec Remparts, also commented on the play that injured his player.

"Nobody is happy to give probably the largest suspension ever in our league to Patrice Cormier, but at the same time I think it's a great opportunity for our league to send a message to our players," said Roy. "I think the league has taken an approach to make sure that situations like this will not happen again. I think it's a step in the right direction."

Cormier's suspension runs through the regular season and playoffs, but he is still eligible to petition for reinstatement should Rouyn-Noranda advance to the Memorial Cup.
"That's something that would be appealed to the Canadian Hockey League (commissioners David Branch (OHL), Ron Robison (WHL), and myself) as the Executive Committee, and from there we'll make a decision," explained Courteau.

Courteau cited the precedent of Chris Simon, who appealed to the same panel and was reinstated from a suspension in time to play for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 1992 Memorial Cup.

Roy thinks the length of Cormier's ban will be an effective deterrent for the future.
"I think the [QMJHL] did something that, because I'm a coach and I'm around the players all the time, I know that they will think about it from now on," said Roy. "It's a good step in the right direction to stop headshots."

Courteau was asked by Landsberg if he wanted other leagues to respect the QMJHL's suspension when considering whether to invite Cormier to play. Cormier could approach several pro leagues about returning to the ice this season.

"Cormier is not allowed to play for any teams or leagues that are under Hockey Canada's jurisdiction, and for the pro leagues we have an agreement with the NHL that goes down to the AHL," explained Courteau. "For the other pro leagues we do not have an agreement, so that's going to be up to them. But our message to them is...please, respect our decision."

SWITCHING FROM HOCKEY to FOOTBALL - EX-SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS - KENT AUSTIN

Ole Miss sustained a blow with national signing day just around the corner with Cornell University’s reported hiring today of Rebels’ offensive coordinator Kent Austin as head coach.Austin, a former Ole Miss quarterback from 1981-85, is replacing Jim Knowles, who left Cornell to become defensive coordinator at Duke under David Cutcliffe. The hiring was reported by the Elmira Star-Gazette and attributed to multiple sources close to the Cornell program. A source also confirmed the report to The Commercial Appeal. In Austin's two years on the Ole Miss staff, the Rebels had one of the most prolific offenses in the SEC, with Jevan Snead at quarterback.

Austin had been a head coach in the Canadian Football League for Saskatchewan, where he was CFL Coach of the Year after guiding the Roughriders to the Grey Cup championship in 2007. He also won the Grey Cup in 1989 as Saskatchewan’s quarterback.Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt has yet to comment on Austin’s departure.

Two of the Pup Line would like to own the club

Former Regina Pat Jamie Heward was on the CKRM Rod Pedersen's Sportsline show last night. He says he and buddy Mike Sillinger are basically waiting on the Parkers to decide when they want to sell the Regina Pats franchise.Heward says their ownership group approached Brent Parker five or six years ago about the prospect of owning the club, and that's the only time it's been mentioned. He says he's been with or around Brent Parker hundreds of times since, and the topic has never came up again. So, Heward says, they are simply waiting patiently. However he and Sillinger are eager to be involved with the Regina Pats in a significant way down the road.

PATS - HOME WARD BOUND - IN THE SNOW STORM

The Regina Pats were to leave (Sunday) this morning at 9:00 am. Here is the latest from Regina Pats CKRM Radio Broadcaster Rod Pedersen .... Game will be on, only if the Regina Pats make it to Regina. The league rules state you can only drive so many hours in a day, and if Kootenay want to head home after there game in Regina tonight (doubt that now), they had to leave Prince Albert last night. We're trying to get out of Swift Current, but as I write this, the bus is stuck in the snow at the hotel parking lot ..... We are now on our way ....

Stuck again - 10:05 am.

After a second tow-job, this time out of the Swift Current arena parking lot, we're on our way home.

And again we're on our way home. All the guy wanted in return was for Jordan Eberle to sign his truck. Away we go.
