BEWARE - MOOSE JAW WARRIORS ALUMNI TEAM

Yesterday at the Regina Pats News Media Room, rumors were going around that the PUP LINE is going to be re-united for the up and coming Trans Canada Clash in the later part of January, 2010. All three were present. Moose Jaw it has been confirmed, they will in fact be playing as one line. Look out Moose Jaw! To bad you will not have your new rink finished, as this should be a sell-out. Can not wait for this clash. It should be a great game. This thing just gets better and better and when you consider we had a sellout in Moose Jaw for the first year clash and 5900 in the Brandt Centre for second year clash, two years ago. There was no game last year.

This is one that Rod shared with me, yesterday.

Rod happened to see Regina Pats Defenceman, Colten Teubert, browsing through one of new Pats books, and this is what both said: "The Puppy Line?" he questioned, somewhat bewildered."It's THE PUP LINE!" I growled. "There's a DIFFERENCE!" He, of course, was referring to the famed late 1980's Pats line of Jamie Heward, Mike Sillinger and Frank Kovacs when they were all 16 year olds and had grown up in Regina. The Line was unusual in that they all played together as one unit.

REGINA PATS NEWS RELEASE - "JUNIOR HOCKEY'S ROYAL FRANCHISE - THE REGINA PATS" BOOK

REGINA PATS NEWS RELEASE - THIS DATE: - http://www.reginapats.com/ -

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats Hockey Club is pleased to announce the release of the book “Junior Hockey’s Royal Franchise: The Regina Pats”. It’s a book about the rich and lively history of the Regina Pats written by former Pats employee Ron “Scoreboard” Johnston and former Leader-Post writer, Darrell Davis.

The book has been a long labor of love for Ron "Scoreboard" Johnston, who started the research of the book in the mid-nineties because of his keen interest to discover the club's origins. He began a 13 year quest, working 8 hours a day, mostly at Regina Central Library and the Saskatchewan Archives, searching microfilm records of old newspaper articles from across Canada.

The research that Scoreboard compiled allowed Darrell Davis to turn the pages, hopefully finding some stories that were worth telling. Darrel interviewed dozens of people associated with the Pats, reveled in their memories and put them to print.

There are stories from every generation of Pat hockey, as well as bios and photos of each Pat to play in the NHL, stats and standings of every Regina Pat team, and stories from each of the retired Pat players.

REGINA STADIUM – QUEEN CITY GARDENS – EXHIBITION STADIUM – Location: Same as The Amphitheatre and Fair Building. It was erected in 1919 and opened on December 4th of the same year. The Regina Leader mentioned, on Wednesday, November 26, that the rinks name would be called “Stadium” given in a name contest by Mrs. W. G. Styles. In 1935 the name was changed to the Exhibition Stadium. August 13, 1938, a group called the Queen City Gardens Limited was created. They approached the Exhibition Board regarding leasing the Stadium rink.

REGINA PATS - DEALING WITH FLUGATE SCANDAL

Pats dealing with Flugate Scandal

By Greg Harder - Regina Leader Post

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

The Regina Pats were busy putting out fires Tuesday over a minor misunderstanding. The Pats’ players and staff members were slated to receive their regularly scheduled flu shots following Tuesday’s practice. The subsequent confusion stemmed from the fact that the team had been informed that the shots would be for the H1N1 virus. Here’s what happened: Long-time Pats doctor Ian Hill was trying to be proactive when he ordered the shots early this summer in hopes that the H1N1 vaccinations would be ready by this fall. Hill was left with the impression that his order went through, when in fact the shots that arrived Tuesday were actually of the regular flu variety.

No big deal, right? Wrong.

According to GM Brent Parker, a minor controversy erupted when Pats broadcaster Rod Pedersen made an innocent comment on his blog about heading to the Brandt Centre this afternoon to receive an H1N1 shot along with the rest of the team.

The Pats subsequently received numerous inquiries and complaints from angry callers who assumed the team was receiving preferential treatment. The Pats even heard from government health officials who wanted answers, since the H1N1 shots aren’t slated to be available to the general public until early next month.

In the end, it was all a mix-up.

So, for the record, the Pats went ahead and received their regular flu shots on Tuesday. They’re slated to get the H1N1 shots after their West Coast road trip in late-November, early December. Ironically, before all this hubbub, I had planned to do a story for Wednesday’s Leader-Post on what the Pats were doing to reduce the risks of contracting H1N1. After a couple of twists and turns, the original story will now run as scheduled.

2010 MASTER CARD MEMORIAL CUP TICKET SALES UPDATE - BRANDON

Taken from Brandon Wheat King Web Site

October 27, 2009

Brandon, MB – The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that a limited number of MasterCard Memorial Cup Ticket Packages are still available for the 2010 Championship, scheduled for May 14-23rd in the Keystone Centre.

In making the announcement Monday, MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament Committee Chairman Jeff Cristall said that close to 90% of Wheat King season ticket holders have exercised their option and purchased tickets to what is expected to be one of the greatest events to ever hit this city.

“The Local Host Committee is happy to announce that after our commitments to both Wheat Kings’ Season Ticket holders and Sponsors, western Manitoba hockey fans still have an excellent opportunity to purchase tickets to the MasterCard Memorial Cup,” says Cristall.

As of Monday afternoon, 3,200 MasterCard Memorial Cup Ticket packages had been sold, meaning that about four hundred will be available when the WHL club holds its Ticket Lottery on November 2nd. The Wheat Kings sold a franchise record 3,600 Season Tickets this year and last month, the Canadian Hockey League returned 350 of their 1,800 Ticket Holds to the WHL club in an effort to meet local demand.

Last month’s announcement by the CHL means that up to 3,652 western Manitoba hockey fans can purchase a 2010 Memorial Cup Ticket package.

Fans interested in having their name entered into next week’s Ticket Lottery are encouraged to do so by calling the Wheat Kings’ office at 726-3535. The Deadline to do so is this Friday, October 30th at 5 p.m.

For the first time in history, the Wheat Kings have earned the right to play host to the MasterCard Memorial Cup. This will mark the first time that Manitoba has hosted the National Championship and it also comes during the province’s 140th Anniversary Celebrations. 2010 will mark the Wheat Kings' fifth Memorial Cup appearance, having competed for the title in 1949, 1979, 1995 and 1996.

REGINA PATS - GRAHAM HOOD IS ADJUSTING TO A STRICT DIET.

Taken from Greg Harder - Regina Leader Post

October 27, 2009

Hood is still searching for a role in the lineup

Graham Hood is adjusting to a strict diet.

A gifted scorer in minor hockey, Hood is having to digest a less prominent role as he attempts to work his way up the food chain with the Regina Pats. It's a transition most young players are forced to endure at the WHL level -- and one that's still a work in progress for Hood.

"You go from being a top guy on your team in minor hockey and you come into something like this, you don't know what (to expect) but you don't really complain," Hood, 17, said after scoring two goals Sunday in Regina's 5-2 win over the visiting Swift Current Broncos. "You take the role you're given and try to make it work. I'll do what I can every night. If I can put the puck in the net, if I need to fight, if I need to hit, I'll just fall into my role."

Asked to identify his role with the Pats, Hood said it changes from night to night.

"It depends where I'm put (in the lineup)," he explained. "If I'm a fourth-line guy, I don't mind being the energy guy every once in a while but I like putting pucks in the net too. Whatever I'm given I try to take advantage of it and do my best."

Hood has been used primarily on the third or fourth line this season, but an injury to Matt Strueby helped open the door for a promotion to the second unit on Sunday with Killian Hutt and Brett Leffler. Hood responded with the first two-goal game of his WHL career.

"It's nice to finally get it," he said with a smile. "I've been working hard. I've had my ups and downs but it's nice that (some offensive success) is finally here and I'm on a little bit of a roll."

Although Hood has moved around the lineup a great deal this season, Pats head coach Curtis Hunt is quick to emphasize that there should be no ambiguity about his role. Regardless of where Hood ends up on a given night, his approach shouldn't change.

"To me the challenge for Graham is to be a hockey player, not get it in your head that 'I need to be a specific guy within the lineup,' " explained Hunt. "He's a big body, he's got some decent skill, but his strength lies down around the net. He should be along the walls and just being an efficient player. When he was drafted we looked at him as a guy to be able to score. You hope he works himself into a position to get those chances (by doing the little things right). He's still a young player. He has to learn to play a complete game and he'll get opportunities."

The Pats selected Hood in the second round (23rd overall) of the 2007 bantam draft after he recorded 61 goals and 114 points in 51 games.

As with most young players, consistency has been Hood's main obstacle at the WHL level. The 6-foot-0, 200-pounder showed brief flashes of physical dominance last season but he would also disappear for long stretches when he didn't use his size to his advantage.

That trend has continued this season, but he's also showing more signs lately of putting it all together.

"I've made more room for myself since I started hitting; it makes the game easier," added Hood, who has four goals and three assists in 15 games this season after recording six goals and seven assists in 60 games as a rookie. "I have to keep trying to roll with it. You get what you give. If you don't have a good game, you're going back down to the fourth line. It's expected. I'm still a young guy. I just have to go with what I get and make the best of it."

RE: REGINA PATS NEW BOOK

Taken from Rod Pedersen.blog - http://www.rodpedersen.com/ -

Speaking of books, I can't imagine Rob Vanstone's too pleased that a month after his book West Riders Best went on sale, the publisher came out with the 100 Year Rider History Book. And this week we'll hear details of Darrell Davis's Regina Pats history book. I can't wait to get my hands on that one.

********************************

I noticed that Rod stated it was Darrell Davis's Book. I have since included a comment on his blog regarding the accuracy of his statement this date. I am sorry Rod did not see fit to include it on his blog.

PAPER COVER COPIES - Will be in Wal-Mart and the book stores this week or next week.

HARD COVER COPIES - You will be able to order them through the Regina Leader Post.

REGINA PATS GUSTAFSSON

Taken from Rod Pedersen.blog - http://www.rodpedersen.com/ -

The Pats announced earlier that Gustafsson is the first player in Regina Pats history to wear #13. Not true. Pats scorekeeper Gary Renner points out Dave Michayluk wore #13 in the early 80's and his teammate Bob "Buffa" Lowes confirmed that last night when Gary pointed it out.

Ron "Scoreboard" Johnston - It is nice to known that someone else came up with this one. Thanks Gary. Gary is "Scorekeeper" while I am "Scoreboard".

***************************

Also: Al Dumba said... Hey Rod, just a note on the Pats #13, Brandon Coates wore it for half a season with us in 1992/93 and 9 games in 93/94. I believe he was the last to wear #13.

Taken from the Hockey Canada - http://www.hockeycanada.ca/ -

Hockey Canada announced on Saturday that Canada’s National Junior Team will wear green jerseys during the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship, in honour of Saskatchewan’s love affair with the CFL’s Roughriders and as a salute to the province. Also, the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship will mark the first time the tournament has returned to Canadian cities (Regina and Saskatoon) for a second time.

The green jerseys were unveiled during the Saskatchewan-B.C. Lions game in Regina on Saturday.

“Green is the colour … hockey is the game,” says Scott Smith, chief operating officer of Hockey Canada. “It’s exciting to release a special version of the Hockey Canada jersey. We believe fans in Saskatchewan, and throughout Canada, will rally around the green jerseys prior to and during the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.”

Canada’s National Junior Team will wear the jerseys twice – once in a pre-competition game and once during the championship. Canada is attempting to win its sixth-straight IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal.

“We’re thrilled with the tribute that Hockey Canada is giving to our province and our sports fans,” says Jack Brodsky, president of the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship host organizing committee. “We expect these jerseys to be a hit and can’t wait to see fans wearing them in the seats during the championship.”

REGINA PATS - AL DUMBA - CKRM COLOR MAN

For Al Dumba, a Dysart native, being part of the Regina Pats was a
wonderful and rewarding experince.

"As kids, we dreamt about playing for the Regina Pats, not about playing in the NHL," said Dumba.

During his sting with the Pats, Dumba found the net 71 times which caught the eye of the NHL scouts. He was drafted by the NHL's Washington Capitals and the WHA's Edmonton Oilers. (Photo: 1974-1975 Season)

Dumba spent parts of three seasons wearing a Regina Pats uniform before heading out to play professional hockey with Dayton and Fort Wayne in the International Hockey League.

After his playing days were done, Dumba returned to his hockey roots in 1991 as an assistant coach with the Pats.

"I had the great opportunity to coach with Brad Tippet and Bill Hicke," said Dumba. "I had a lot of fun coaching."

In 1992-93 Dumba became a co-coach with Bill Hicke. "Bill hicke was a mentor to me," said Dumba, "Bill let me run practice while he took care of the administrative side of the team."

Dumba felt his success as a hockey player contributed to his success as a coach. "I was lucky to have been expose to different systems and different philosophies in pro hockey which helped me as a coach," said Dumba.

Today, Dumba can still be found around the Brandt Centre as a member of the 620 CKRM broadcast team, a position he has held for the last 13 years.

According to the voice of the Regina Pats, Rod Pedersen, Al Dumba is one of the most genuine people in the world.

"Al is one of the most positive people I have ever met," said Pedersen. "Wed have tremendous chemistry on the air, which helps to produce a pretty good product for our listeners."

"It's fun to be involved," said Dumba. "The hockey fraternity is small and I really enjoy being around the guys."

When he is not at the Brandt Centre, Dumba is following his son Jared's hockey career. Jared followed in his father's footsteps and played in the WHL with Saskatoon before finding sucess professionally in the Central hockey League and the International Hockey League.

Away from the rink, Dumba has found sucess in the investment field, as the owner of Al Dumba Investors Group.

"Hockey taught me that you need to work to be the best you can be, no matter what you are doing," said Dumba.

Dumba continues to enjoy his time with the hockey club. "It is a special feeling to be part of the Regina Pats," he said.

REGINA PATS UPDATE - MATT STRUEBY OUT

Pats update (Strueby out)

By Greg Harder - Regina Leader Post

Friday, October 23, 2009

The Regina Pats will be without overage forward Matt Strueby for this weekend’s home-and-home set against the Swift Current Broncos.

Strueby, who’s second on the team with eight goals in 14 games, suffered a concussion during Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to the Saskatoon Blades when he was hit from behind by Travis Toomey. Toomey received a one-game suspension while Strueby is expected to miss about a week.

“Our trainer and medical staff is phenomenal with making sure the guys are where they need to be, especially when it comes to concussions,” noted head coach Curtis Hunt. “There is zero grey area here in Regina when it comes to the protocol.”

Pats forward Brayden Metz may also sit out Saturday’s game in Swift Current with a bruised foot suffered while blocking a shot on Wednesday. Meanwhile, RW Killian Hutt is slated to return after missing four games with the flu. He has three goals and four points in five games since being acquired from the Portland Winter Hawks.“We’ll see how much he plays,” said Hunt. “His fitness is a big concern of mine right now. It was getting there and then he got the flu. The flu can knock you out.

We’ll watch him closely but we’ll get him in.”

Forwards Jason Gardiner and Andrew Rieder are expected to get back in the lineup this weekend after being healthy scratches. G Damien Ketlo will start his fourth straight game Saturday after missing five in a row with a groin injury. He may also get the call Sunday at the Brandt Centre.

As for the Broncos, who have a 7-1 record on home ice . . . “It’s a great building to go into,” said Hunt. ‘They have a great home crowd. We want to try to take the crowd out of it. You’ve gotta minimize the turnovers or they’ll quick-transition you to death. It’s about making sure we all work to position, keep our shifts short and have a predator-like mentality in all three zones. It’s a game of mistakes. Everybody makes them. It’s about minimizing them.”

SASKATOON BLADES - TRAVIS TOOMEY - SUSPENDED ONE GAME - FOR HIT ON PATS MATT STRUEBY

Taken from Rod Pedersen.blog

Toomey Suspended

Saskatoon Blades forward Travis Toomey (Leduc, AB) has been suspended one game by the Western Hockey League for a hit on October 21st against the Regina Pats. Toomey was assessed a double minor for checking from behind in the first period of Wednesday’s game for a hit on Pats forward Matt Strueby. The third-year Blade will miss tonight’s game against the Swift Current Broncos and will be eligible to return in time for tomorrow night’s game against the Kamloops Blazers at home.

May be the WHL should have given Toomey more than one game suspension, I notice that Saskatoon is loosing to Swift Current 4-0, Friday night, after the second period.

The Edmonton Oilers tried to call up Jordan Eberle from the Pats on an emergency recall basis for last night's game against Columbus. The flu has ravaged the Oilers locker room.

However rules prevented it from happening. No one seems to know what those rules are. But Jordan's not exactly happy with it. According to the Edmonton Journal, only 17 players were at Edmonton's morning skate Thursday. The Oilers couldn't get a player in from their farm team in Springfield, Mass., in time for the game, so they considered bringing up Eberle. The 19-year-old Pats star was Edmonton's first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2008 NHL entry draft. "It's a little disappointing (not being able to go to Edmonton)," said Eberle, who has 11 goals and 19 points in nine WHL games this season. "At the same time, it's a little cool that they were even thinking of me."

For you Regina Pat fans who did not hear the broadcast of Prince Albert Raiders game:

Which Regina Pats broadcaster went on a two game road trip and forgot to bring pants? Dan Plaster. So he had to scramble to Walmart, in Saskatoon to grab a pair in advance of the P.A. game. I was in favour of him going Gainer-the-Gopher style, without pants, but he was afraid of a fine.

REGINA PATS - 3 vs. SASKATOON BLADES - 4

REGINA AND SASKATOON, 7:05 p.m. at CREDIT UNION CENTRE, on CKRM, ROD PEDERSEN.

Taken from Rod Pedersen.blog - http://www.rodpedersen.com/ -

SASKATOON HIGHWAY 11 RIVALRY - Tonight is already the 4th of 8 meetings this season between the Saskatoon Blades and the Regina Pats. The Blades hold the edge in the season series thus far with a 2-0-0-1 record vs. Regina. In the first game these two teams played, back on Sept 18th, the Blades defeated the Pats by a score of 5-1. On the 23rd of September, the Pats used the shoot-out to claim a 4-3 victory over the visiting Blades. 4 days later back in Regina, the Blades skated to a 4-1 victory over their hosts.

In the WHL scoring race, Regina Pats Jordan Eberle has move into second place in goals scored. Jason Bast of Moose Jaw Warriors in 13 games has 13 goals, while Eberle in only 8 games has scored 10.

GAME SUMMARY: In the first period both teams had a chance to score on break-a-ways; Travis Tommey near the mid point and Jordan Eberle with about 6 minutes left. Regina Pats took the lead when Brett Leffler, was patient and waited before scoring at 17:51, assisted by Myles Bell and Colten Teubert. Saskatoon tied the score at 1-1 with only 10 seconds remaining in the period, a power play goal by Josh Hulak on a rebound, assisted by Stefan Elliott. The big story of the opening frame was Toomey's hit from behind on Regina forward Matt Strueby. The 20-year old Pats forward had blood coming from his and had to be taken to the dressing room, and never returned due to a concussion.. And Toomey becomes the hero of the game! He should have been thrown out of the game.

In the second period, Saskatoon went up 2-1, when Travis Tommey got a turn over and scored on a break-a-way at 3:50. Saskatoon scored again when Stefan Elliott scored at 9:10 assisted by Hulak and Gaelan Patterson. Regina Pats Jordan Eberle had a chance to bring the score closer at 12:57 when he was given a penalty shot. He had Blades goal tender Adam Morrison down and out, only to shot over the net. On a power play, Pats did finally score at 17:09, when Eberle shot on net and Jordan Weal bat the puck out of the air and scored on the rebound, also Brett Leffler assisted.

Saskatoon's Toomey scored his second break-a-way goal at 3:53 into the third period, assisted by Sam Kalssen to give the Blades a 4-2 score. Pats coach Curtis Hunt pulled his goalie Ketlo with over two minutes left and it worked as Jordan Eberle, his 11th, scored at 18:09, assisted by Graham Hood.

TEAM WHL COACHING STAFF ANNOUNCED FOR SUBWAY® SUPER SERIES

October 21, 2009 - Calgary, Alberta – The Canadian Hockey League in association with SUBWAY® and the three regional leagues the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Western Hockey League, today announced the coaching staffs for each of the six games of the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series.

All three regional league teams will be led by members of Team Canada’s National Junior Team coaching staff including Head Coach Willie Desjardins who will serve as the Head Coach for Team WHL. Team Canada Associate Coach Dave Cameron and Assistant Coach Steve Spott will lead Team OHL behind the bench, with Assistant Coach André Tourigny serving as Head Coach for Team QMJHL.

“The SUBWAY® Super Series is a terrific opportunity for our coaching staffs to get to know the players who will attend the World Junior Selection Camp in December” said Al Murray, Head Scout for Team Canada’s Men’s National Teams. “This event is a very effective tool for us to evaluate players and make decisions about the players that will represent Team Canada in Saskatoon this winter.”

Desjardins is in his eighth season as Head Coach of the Medicine Hat Tigers and his fifth as the team’s General Manager. He will lead Team WHL for games five and six of the series in Victoria on Wednesday November 25 and in Kelowna on Thursday November 26. He worked as an Assistant Coach for Team Canada last season winning gold before taking over as Head Coach of Canada’s National Junior Team this year. He was named the WHL and CHL Coach of the Year in 2006.

Don Hay of the Vancouver Giants and Ryan Huska of the Kelowna Rockets will work as Assistant Coaches for both Team WHL games. Hay coached Team Canada to a Gold Medal at the 1995 World Junior Hockey Championships and was named WHL Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2009. Huska is in his third season as the Rockets’ Head Coach leading the team to a WHL Championship and an appearance in the MasterCard Memorial Cup finals last season.

Tourigny, in his seventh season as Head Coach and General Manager of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, will be the man in charge behind the bench when the series opens in Drummondville on Monday November 16 and in Shawinigan on Wednesday November 18. Prior to his involvement with the National Junior Team, Tourigny served as an Assistant Coach with Canada’s National Summer Under-18 Team at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka and was named the QMJHL Coach of the Year in 2005-06.

Mario Duhamel of the Drummondville Voltiguers, will serve as an Assistant Coach for Team QMJHL on home ice for the first game of the series, followed by Eric Veilleux of the Shawinigan Cataractes, who will assist Tourigny when Shawinigan hosts game two. Duhamel served as an Assistant Coach for Team Quebec at the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

Cameron and Spott will work both games behind the bench for Team OHL on Thursday November 19 in Barrie and on Monday November 23 in Windsor. Cameron, who coached Team OHL last season, is in his third straight season and seventh overall as Head Coach and General Manager of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. He won a Gold Medal as an Assistant Coach with Pat Quinn and Team Canada at the 2009 World Juniors in Ottawa. Spott is in his second season as Head Coach and General Manager with the Kitchener Rangers with National Team experience the last two years as an Assistant Coach for Canada at the 2009 World Men’s Under-18 Championships and at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka.

Assisting Cameron and Spott for game three of the series in Barrie will be Colts’ Head Coach Marty Williamson, with Spitfires’ Head Coach Bob Boughner assisting in game four played in Windsor. Boughner won the OHL and CHL Coach of the Year Award the last two seasons and won gold with Team Canada’s National Summer Under-18 Team at the 2009 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka. Williamson was Head Coach of Team Ontario in 2006 and won gold at the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

Last season, CHL teams defeated Team Russia in five of the six games in the series before Team Canada captured their fifth straight Gold Medal at the World Junior Championships.

The regional league rosters will be announced individually beginning with Team QMJHL on Thursday October 22 followed by Team OHL and Team WHL next week.

The 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series is supported by CHL associate sponsors, Bank of Montreal and CCM. All games will be broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet with the two QMJHL games shown on RDS.

REGINA PATS - 2 vs. PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS - 3 (OVERTIME)

Pats Garrett Mitchell the 18-year-old right winger has been given medical clearance to return to the Regina Pats' lineup after sitting out nine games with a broken thumb. Mitchell was slated to miss 4-6 weeks, but subsequent tests revealed that the damage wasn't as severe as originally projected, so the thumb was allowed to heal without having a pin inserted. To Gustafsson, Regina is a Swede fit

Hampus Gustafsson was still flying when he made his Regina Pats' debut on Saturday.

That's no surprise since he was running mostly on adrenaline -- and not much sleep -- after a full day of travel from Sweden to Regina. The 18-year-old winger jumped on a plane Friday morning immediately after learning he had been picked up by the Pats, who released Czech rookie Michal Poletin and added Gustafsson as a free agent.

Gustafsson had been sitting at home for nearly a month after being released by the Saskatoon Blades, who were forced to part with the Swedish rookie after veteran import Milan Kytnar -- who has since been traded to Vancouver -- was unexpectedly returned from the Edmonton Oilers.

WHL teams can only keep two European players.

"I said to my agent right away when I came home that if another (WHL) team is interested I'm saying 'yes,' it doesn't matter what team it is," Gustafsson explained after his Pats debut on Saturday in a 4-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. "Regina is a good team for me. I think it fits me well here. The guys in Saskatoon are good guys but I think for me playing in Regina it can be better."

The Blades selected Gustafsson is the first round (57th overall) of the 2009 CHL import draft. The 5-foot-10, 174-pounder is one of the few Swedes toiling in North America, but there's no place he'd rather be.

"I just wanted to come over to the CHL and play Canadian style hockey -- smaller ice surface and stuff," he said. "I wanted to play in Canada because I like everything about how they play here, the type of hockey they play. It's faster here and all the fans and media and stuff, it's a good way to get noticed."

Gustafsson wasn't expected to join the Pats' lineup until he got at least one practice under his belt. However, head coach Curtis Hunt decided to throw him straight into the fire, even deploying him on the penalty kill. In his first game he wore # 13, the first time that a Regina Pat player has ever worn the number on his Jersey.

Gustafsson responded by throwing his body in front of a slap shot and later made a nice pass to Dominick Favreau, producing an excellent scoring chance.

"I know this much about him, I knew he had high character," said Hunt.

"I had a chance to talk to (Blades head coach/GM Lorne Molleken) about him. I knew he was a very intelligent player and I've played in enough big games against Swedish players (to know) they compete and play. He was everything I thought he would be. I thought he played a very intelligent game. Getting off the plane, new team ... I thought he'd probably burn on emotion. Now he gets a chance to go home and get some sleep in the next couple days and then we can get him better acclimated to our system. He's a great addition."

It remains to be seen how Gustafsson will fit into Regina's long-term plans, but he certainly made a positive first impression.

"Any time you fly from Sweden to Canada and you play the next day, it's not an easy trip," noted Pats veteran Jordan Eberle.

"For him to jump in and block a huge shot for us and make some key plays, that was huge. It's good to see that he cares that much already. When you see a guy who's barley been in the room for a couple hours and he throws his body in front of a shot like that you definitely get respect from your teammates."

Gustafsson said it was "fun" to jump right into the fray, noting that he "came back for a reason" and was eager to take advantage of the opportunity.

In fact, Gustafsson wasn't even nervous before the game.

"I guess maybe because of the jet-lag -- I was too tired," he added with a smile.

"Maybe because when I first came into the locker room everybody was talking to me right away. I didn't feel any (nerves) at all."

REGINA PATS NEWS - MITCHELL, GUSTAFSSON

Pats news (Mitchell, Gustafsson)

By Greg Harder - Regina Leader Post

Tuesday, October 20 2009

Garrett Mitchell is ahead of schedule and is expected to be back in Regina’s lineup Tuesday against the host Prince Albert Raiders.

The 18-year-old right winger has been cleared to return after missing nine games with a broken thumb suffered on Sept. 23, when he blocked a shot by Saskatoon Blades defenceman Jyri Niemi. Mitchell was originally slated to miss 4-6 weeks, but subsequent tests revealed that the damage wasn’t as severe as originally thought. As a result, the thumb was allowed to heal without having a pin inserted.

Mitchell had his cast removed on Friday — just three weeks after the injury — when the team’s medical staff determined that the fracture had healed. He has been fitted with a playing cast and can return as soon as he feels comfortable holding a stick, shooting and handling physical contact.
Mitchell admitted he tried to talk the coaches into letting him play Saturday against Lethbridge but realized afterwards it was probably for the best that he not rush it.

Meanwhile, Right Winger Killian Hutt has nearly recovered from the flu but the team is giving him a couple extra days to get his strength back. He's expected to sit out the next two games before returning to practice Thursday and getting back in the lineup Friday. He has missed two straight games.

Note: Mitchell raised $1,200 in pledges for breast cancer research by having his head shaved at centre ice on Saturday. When the final numbers are in from Breast Cancer Awareness Night, the Pats are hoping to raise about $10,000, most of which will come from the silent auction for the team’s special game-worn jerseys.— — —Talking to new Pats import Hampus Gustafsson, the first thing you notice is obviously the fact that he speaks excellent English. The other thing that strikes you right away is the fact that he’s in great shape. In fact, for a guy who’s only 5-foot-10, 174 pounds, the kid is built like a brick house.

Asked to describe himself as a player, Gustafsson had this to say:

“If you would ask my last coaches it would probably be to score goals and make offensive plays but obviously they got Wealer and Eberle here already so maybe I will have to take the defensive part,” he said. “I want to help the team. If they want me to play defensive part I’m willing to do that. I think I’m a decent two-way player. I like to contribute in a way that the team needs me to. I can play PK and I can play offensive too. Whatever coach tells me to do, I do.”

Gustafsson said he didn’t know a lot about the Pats before he arrived — aside from the presence of one player in particular.“

Of course I know about Eberle,” he said. “Who doesn’t? I know world juniors is playing here and Sweden has their group here.”

The timing could be fortuitous if Gustafsson performs well for the Pats and catches the attention of Team Sweden, but he’s talking as if the world juniors aren’t in the cards for him this year.“It would be fun for me to play there but to be realistic I’m not in the lineup,” said the 18-year-old winger. “Hopefully next year.”

REGINA PATS - FIND THEIR DEFENSEMAN

Pats find their D-man?

The Regina Pats’ search for a puck-moving blueliner may be over. (Checking the WHL (Medicine Hat Tigers) web site at 8:00 a.m. this morning his name and picture were included in their roster, but by 10:30 a.m. they had been removed it).

IT IS OFFICAL - Regina Pats Web site - 10:45 am

Pats Land Defencemen - www.reginapats.com/News/737 -
in exchange for a 3rd round bantam pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. Carlson will be at practice this afternoon at the Brandt Centre; media availability is at 1:45. He will be in the line-up tomorrow night as the Pats will take on the Prince Albert Raiders. It’s a 6:35 pre-game show start on 620 CKRM.

The WHL club is believed to be talking to the Medicine Hat Tigers about Cody Carlson, 18, who has been scratched the past four games and is rumoured to have asked for a trade. In fact, it sounds like the deal may have been done late last week but the Victoria native initially balked because he wanted to play closer to home.

After some persuading, Carlson may now be changing his tune. If the deal does indeed go through this time, it could be announced as early as Monday, with Regina sending either a draft pick or non-roster prospect the other way.

It’s no secret that Regina has been seeking an offensive-minded blueliner who can quarterback the power play. Carlson fits that mould. He has high-end skill, although his numbers don’t reflect it in Medicine Hat, where he’s playing behind two top offensive D-men in Mark Isherwood and Tomas Kundratek.

Carlson was a first-round pick (21st overall) in the 2006 bantam draft. He had a solid rookie season in 2007-08, posting 16 points in 49 games, with a plus-10 rating. The 5-foot-10, 184-pounder had 16 points in 51 games last season and has started off this year with one goal and four points in seven outings.

When the Tigers drafted Carlson in 2006, head scout Bob Green — now the Edmonton Oil Kings' GM — had this to say:“Cody is an excellent skater and has great skills. His skill set enables him to play at both ends of the rink.

Cody possesses strong leadership and was the captain of his team this year. Being of strong character is something we are looking for in every player we draft.”

REGINA PATS - SEND JUSTIN SLOBOZIAN to DAUPHIN, MANITOBA

By Greg Harder
Regina Leader Post
Slap Shots -

Saturday, October 17, 2009

The inevitable finally happened today when the Pats shipped Defenceman, Justin Slobozian to the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings.

It's a move that has been expected for some time. Slobozian has played just four games this season (seeing negligible icetime) and he clearly won’t be given a chance to crack Curtis Hunt’s defensive rotation any time soon. It makes no sense to let the kid rot in the press box when he should be given an opportunity to develop elsewhere. Better late than never.

In hindsight, the Pats never should have kept Slobozian in the WHL last season as a 16-year-old. Coming out of the Manitoba high school ranks, he clearly wasn’t ready and needed a year in midget AAA. It’s hard to say to what extent Slobozian’s career has been set back at this point, but it’s not too late for him to regain some confidence at a lower level and get back on track. The move to Dauphin is a great opportunity, since the Kings are the host team for this year’s Royal Bank Cup. The junior A club is loading up with ex-WHL talent, including former Pats centre Mitch Czibere, ex-Brandon Wheat King goalie Joe Caligiuri, former Red Deer Rebels tough guy Cody Esposito and two ex-Prince Albert Raiders: Forward Bryce Lamb and defenceman Patrick Kozyra.

LETHBRIDGE HURRICANES - 1 vs. REGINA PATS - 4

vs.

For the fourth year in a row, the Pats will culminate their activities with their “Breast Cancer Awareness Night”. The Pats' Dan Plaster and Al Dumba will broadcast tonight's Pats game against Lethbridge at 7:00 in the Brandt Centre.

Linden ROWAT - in his new team jersey.

GAME SUMMARY: Regina Pats Defenceman Colten Teubert on a power play, battled with the puck at the blue line, then skated in towards the net and scored at 11:18, assisted by Matt Scrueby and Brayden Metz. Lethbridge tied the game on a screen shot, on a two man advantager power play goal by Eric Mestery at 13:25, assisted by Carter Bancks and Brennan Yadlowski. Lethbridge out shot Regina 17-8 in the first period.

Regina got into penalty problems, having to fight off seven penalties, before they scored on their second power play, on a two man advantage. It was Jordan Eberle, his eighth goal, scoring at the side of the net at 18:20, assisted by Brandon Davidson and Matt Delahey. Injured Pats RW Garrett Mitchell had his head shaved at centre ice during the second intermission to raise money as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night

In the third period Regina Pats went up 3-1 when Eberle scored on a quick hard shot by Linden Rowat's blocker side at the 7:01 mark, assisted by Matt Delahey. Regina scored on a power play goal at 15:09 when Matt Scrueby went to the net and scored on a back hand goal, assisted by Jordan Weal and Jordan Eberle. The assist by Eberle moved him into the team scoring lead with 16 points. In only 7 games Eberle has moved into 8th place in the WHL scoring race, with 9 goals and 7 assists.
