REGINA PATS - LOST AGAIN IN A SHOOT OUT

St. Albert - August 30, 2009

The Regina Pats and the Swift Current Broncos were hoping to get their first win in Game 6 of the Edmonton Oil Kings Pre-season Invitational Tournament presented by Elite Sportswear and Awards. It was Swift Current 8, Regina Pats 7 in a shoot out.

The Broncos score first on a breakaway. Mike Brown goes upstairs on Regina goaltender Derek Tendler. It doesn’t take Swift Current long to strike again. Andy Blanke drives the net, Jordan Peddle tips in his centering pass, and it is 2 – 0. Regina comes back to score less than a minute after that. Michal Poletin beats Bronco goalie Chad Ketting to make it 2 – 1. The Pats tie it up at 2 before the half way point of the frame. Jordan Weal goes in alone, dekes and sticks the back hand under the bar. The Broncos Brown gets another break away and is hooked going in. He gets a penalty shot, elects to shoot, but Tendler makes a pad save to keep the score 2 – 2.

Period two starts with five goals in just over seven minutes. Swift Current gets goals from Jordan Evans, Peddle with his second of the game, and Eric Doyle. Regina replies with markers from Tomas Hricina and Andrew Rieder. Add it all up, and the Broncos are up 5 – 4. Things settle down, until the Pats take back to back penalties. The Broncos Justin Dowling has a shot goes off a defenseman, and in, to make it 6 – 4. Regina gets it back to within one. Poletin feeds Graham Hood in the slot for the quick one timer. The period ends 6 – 5.

The Broncos get the two goal lead back in the third when Dane Muench finds Dillon Wagner alone in the slot. He whips one past Regina’s second goalie, Dawson Guhle. The Pats get back within one on a blast from the high slot from Matt Strueby, its 7 – 6. Regina pulls even when Poletin scores his second of the game with just over two minutes to play. The third period ends with the score tied seven all, and so does overtime. We have a shootout.

Swift Current goalie Alexandre Sirard is the hero stopping 2 of 3 Pat shooters. The Broncos win 8 – 7, after a 2 – 1 win in the shootout.

'St. Albert – August 28, 2009 - The Edmonton Oil Kings 3rd Annual Pre-season Invitational Tournament is underway at Servus Credit Union Place in St. Albert. The hosts were up against the Regina Pats Friday night. The Oil Kings failed to convert on four power plays in a tight checking first period. The team’s best chance came late in the period while a man up. Robin Soudek set up Clayton Cumiskey on the door step but he failed to convert. At the other end, Oil King goalie Cam Lanigan was solid stopping Graham Hood on a breakaway. Late in the frame he robbed Matt Strueby in close.

The first period ends scoreless. One of the Oil Kings young guns opened the scoring in the second. Keegan Lowe’s point shot found it’s way passed Regina goalie Damien Ketlo to make it 1 – 0. The Oil Kings made it 2 – 0 on the power play after a wild goal mouth scramble. TJ Foster had a couple whacks at it before Michael St. Croix finally struck it in.“I thought Foster and St. Croix had some good chemistry tonight.” says Head Coach Steve Pleau. “Both guys are smart hockey players. They make good reads and move the puck around well.”

Regina started the third period with a brief two man advantage but the Oil Kings penalty kill held tight. Four minutes into the third, Lanigan robbed Hood again on a set up at the top of the crease. Midway through the period, the Pats had another power play chance. Tomas Hricina tipped a point shot but Lanigan was able to get a pad on it. Edmonton put it away on a power play goal by Garrett Thiessen and an even strength marker by Robin Soudek. The night belonged to Lanigan who back stopped the team to a 4 - 0 win. The Oil Kings tender made stops for the shut out. “Lanigan was our best player tonight.” said Pleau. “He settled down after training camp and made some great saves.”

Lanigan credits the Oil Kings new Goaltender Coach, Lyle Mast, with his improved focus. “We sat down and discussed going back to the basics,” said Lanigan. “He got me concentrating on the puck, not just to see it but to stop it.”

The Oil Kings Invitational continues tomorrow, with three games on the schedule. HARRY "HUDDY" BOTLEY BELL - REGINA PATS PART TIME OWNER OF THE 1980'S PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT IN SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, AT THE AGE OF 83.

By: Ron C. Johnston

Harry "Huddy" BELL was born 31 October 1925, at Regina, Saskatchewan. Huddy was one of the five new owners of the 1985-1986 Regina Pats. He was one of the first defenseman credited with using the slap shot. He and his brothers were involved in apartment construction and ownership of the Bell City Motel (which became the Sandman Inn). (Photos: Harry - New York Rovers - and Regina Pats Program 1985 - Ron C. Johnston - Collection)

Harry started his hockey with the Regina Commandos (SJHL) in 1943-1944 and played in the Memorial Cup that year. The following year had Military Service. Played with the New York Rovers (EAHL) 1945-46. The next year 1946-47 played with New Haven Ramblers (AHL), plus 1 game with the New York Rangers (NHL). From my cousin - Will Klein, Scottsdale, Arizona ,

at 12:04 p.m. - Regina Pats Part Owner - 1979-1983

Received an e-mail from him - 12:10 p.m. this date:

Yes, I did know Huddy, as a matter of fact the home we have lived in for the past 21 years we purchased from Huddy.

I was not a personal friend of his but knew him socially. He had a very interesting background and his life would make a great movie, talk about rags to riches. At one time he was probably the largest private land holder/trader in Arizona (would have to be confirmed).

His brother Dick Bell (a paraplegic became an excellent golfer)

He was an excellent athlete in his younger days, played in the NY Rangers chain for the NY Rovers when he was a teen ager. I believe credit is given to Boom Boom Geofrion for inventing the slap shot but I have heard it attributed to Huddy Bell on many occasions.

He became a low handicap golfer. He came to Arizona to help overcome severe arthritis, I heard he was actually taken off a flight from Canada to Phoenix on a stretcher in the ‘60s (he came here because of the very dry temperatures) and the relocation worked miracles for him.

e-mail from Orville Off, Ex-Regina Pat - 12:37 p.m.

Apparently Huddy was in Regina a few days ago and was staying at Hotel Saskatchewan and the story is that he fell and hurt his head. He had a hip replacement in Scottsdale a short time ago, I don't know if that was the cause of the fall. He went to the hospital in Regina and had a scan that didn't show any damage. He then flew back to Scottsdale and suffered a blood clot in the brain and apparently died a few hours later. I understand the funeral will be in Regina next Wednesday.

REGINA — Harry "Huddy" Bell, a prominent Regina businessman for the last several decades, died Thursday night in Phoenix, Arizona, at 83.

Born Oct. 31, 1925, he served in the Canadian Army from 1943 to 1945 during the Second World War.

In 1945, Bell was scouted and signed by the New York Rangers as a free agent, playing just one NHL game as a defenceman against the Chicago Blackhawks in March of 1947.

He played 374 minor league games with the New York Rovers (EHL), New Haven (AHL), St. Paul (USHL) and Tacoma (PCHL) between 1945 and 1951. He retired from pro hockey in 1952.
Bell was one of the quintet of business owners — including Ted Knight, Jack Nicolle, Morley Gusway and Bill Hicke — that purchased the Regina Pats in February of 1986.

SJHL - HALL of FAME AND WALL of HONOR - THIS YEAR'S INAUGURAL INDUCTEES -

Taken from the SHL Web Site:

Thursday, August 27, 2009

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce the creation of the SJHL Hall Of Fame and Wall Of Honor.

The SJHL virtual Hall Of Fame includes a 12-team Wall Of Honor, 1-league Wall Of Honor, and 1-SJHL Hall Of Fame.

The SJHL prides itself on Rich Tradition, Strong Future and therefore has created a venue to recognize greats from years past. In general, the premise is to highlight success for those players, officials, coaches, and builders who used the SJHL as a springboard for future success.
Annually, teams will nominate a candidate on their team’s Wall Of Honor to be considered for the SJHL Hall Of Fame.

A selection process based on merit and other determined criteria shall select no more than six Hall Of Fame inductees per year. A Hall Of Fame Game will be played in conjunction with the Hall Of Fame Weekend. The Battlefords North Stars will be in Weyburn to face the Red Wings on October 9th. A Hall Of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony will highlight the festivities on October 10th.

This year's inaugural inductees include:

Ron Hextall (Melville Millionaires) - Hextall used the Millionaire program as the initial stepping stone toward his glorious career in the National Hockey League, predominately spent with the Philadelphia Flyers. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as a rookie in 1987 for being the NHL's MVP during the playoffs. He also was the first ever netminder to shoot and score a goal at the NHL level, something he also accomplished in the playoffs. He's currently the Assistant General Manager for the Los Angeles Kings.

Chris Chelios (Moose Jaw Canucks) - Chelios spent three years in the SJHL and parlayed his Junior 'A' career into an NCAA scholarship before landing on the scene with the Montreal Canadiens in 1985, getting named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. He has won three Norris Trophies for being the NHL's top defenseman. The 25-year NHL veteran is hoping to begin his 26th season this October.

Wayne Kartusch (SJHL President and Regina Pats) - Kartusch spent 26-years as President of the SJHL, resigning his post in 2003. He has received numerous accolades and honors for hard work and dedication to the sport of the game. He has been bestowed a lifetime membership to the SHA as well as the Canadian Junior Hockey League. He's also been named Hockey Canada's Volunteer Of The Year. He was enshrined in Saskatchewan's Sports Hall Of Fame in 2007. Played with the Regina 1958-1959 and 1959-1960 seasons. Also was a referee in the SJHL.

Ron Rumball (Weyburn Red Wings) - Rumball has provided the Red Wings with forty years of service, holding roles on the Board of Directors, Director Of Scouting, Assistant Coach, Interim Head Coach, and General Manager. A retired school teacher, Rumball continues to seek out talent for the Wings, who have a storied history as one of the SJHL's most storied franchises. His most recent major accomplishment was serving as GM for the 2005 RBC Cup champions.

Dwight McMillan (Weyburn Red Wings) - McMillan has won over a thousand regular season games in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, putting him in an extremely elite class with Scotty Bowman (NHL) and Brian Kilrea (OHL). His tenure as a player and/or coach has spanned five decades with Weyburn and he wielded some magic in 2005 by taking a fifth place team and leading them to an RBC Cup (national championship). McMillan has ties back to the Red Wings as far back as 1961 when he appeared as a rookie on the very first Red Wing club ever.

The SJHL is extremely proud and pleased to announce the creation of the virtual Hall Of Fame and Wall Of Honor as well as to recognize these five very special individuals for being the first ever inductees.

IT IS OFFICIAL - EX-REGINA PATS MIKE SILLINGER - HAS RETIRED

The veteran centre has been on the limp for nearly two years due to chronic hip problems which required three surgeries — two on the left, one on the right — and will likely force him to undergo a replacement procedure later in life. As a result, Sillinger felt the time was right to announce his retirement on Wednesday, realizing the wear and tear of 17 professional seasons had caught up to him and might affect his quality of life down the road.

"It's the most logical decision to make," offered the 38-year-old Regina native, who has a titanium ball and joint in his left hip. "If I continue playing, best-case scenario, I sneak through another year. Worst-case scenario, I'm having a hip replacement before I'm 40 years old. There's no way a 40-year-old should have a hip replacement. I've had a great career and I have to move forward. It's a sad day but it's the start of a new beginning for our whole family. Am I going to miss hockey? Of course. Am I happy with my decision? There was no decision. My decision was made easy for me, but I'm content with what I'm doing. I really feel solid that I gave it all I had for all those years."

"Mike has and always will be a tremendous ambassador for this game," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. "He is a born leader in everything he does and on behalf of the New York Islanders I wish him and his family the very best in the future."

Sillinger, his wife Karla, and their three sons (Owen, 12, Lukas, 9, and Cole, 6) customarily spend the off-seasons in the Queen City. This summer, however, has been unlike any other — in that Sillinger is not preparing for the rigours of another hockey season.

New York Islanders forward Mike Sillinger is calling it a career. The Regina product played only seven games last year and had season-ending surgery in January. The 38-year-old played for a record 12 different NHL teams and wore 8 different jersey numbers: # 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 21, 23, and 26. He was traded 10 times during his career, including twice in one day in July, 2003.

REGINA PATS - BLUE & WHITE GAME

Gregg - Regina Leader Post Slap Shot. blog

With 8 veteran players out of the line-up, it was the youngsters' time to shine in the annual Regina Pats Prairie Mobile Communications Blue & White game.

LUMSDEN — Michal Poletin doesn't speak any English, so he's letting his play do all the talking. Czech rookie Michal Poletin scored two goals on Tuesday to lead Team Blue to a 6-4 win over Team White in the Regina Pats’ annual intrasquad game at Lumsden Arena. Both of Poletin’s goals came on pretty setups by Jordan Weal, who finished with three assists. Brayden Metz, Myles Bell, Dayton Reinboldt and Devon Allenby (empty netter) had the other goals for Team Blue. Tomas Hricina, Lucas Froese, Tyler Borstmayer and Garrett Mitchell (penalty shot) replied for Team White.

Mitchell’s penalty-shot marker brought Team White within a goal with 1:35 remaining but Allenby iced it with 33 seconds on the clock, scoring into an empty net.

With veterans Linden Rowat and Damien Ketlo getting the night off, the Pats split playing time between four rookie goalies.

The starting assignments went to top prospects Derek Tendler and Dawson Guhle, who dominated the midget AAA ranks last season and are duelling for a job in the Pats’ muddled crease. They allowed two goals apiece in 1 1/2 periods of work, with Tendler stopping seven of nine shots and Guhle shining with 17 saves on 19 shots.

Cory Nygaard picked up the win in relief with 16 saves on 18 shots. Rogers took the loss with 11 saves on 14 shots. Both goalies were re-assigned following the game, joined by D-men Ty Ariss, Hudson Friesen and Rhett Holland; and, forwards Dyson Stevenson, Reinboldt, Shaq Merasty, Garrett Lockeridge, Matthew Hildebrandt, A.J. Fossen, Aiden Crowther, Thomas Cardinal, Ryan Baskerville, Tayler Balog and Allenby.

That leaves the Pats with 36 players: Four goalies, 13 defencemen and 19 forwards. They’ll trim that to about 25 for the start of the regular season.

Several veterans got the night off, including D Colten Teubert, RW Jordan Eberle and all five 20-year-olds: LW Matt Strueby, C Mitch Czibere, RW Brett Leffler, D Matt Delahey and G Linden Rowat. LW Jason Gardiner and C Dominick Favreau sat out with knee injuries.

The team has one more day of practice before heading to Edmonton on Thursday for a pre-season tournament. Regina will meet the host Oil Kings (Friday), Medicine Hat Tigers (Saturday) and Swift Current Broncos (Sunday). Those are the first of seven pre-season games for the Pats, whose exhibition home-opener is Sept. 9 against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

MOOSE JAW WARRIORS & McDONALDS HOSPITAL ROOM OPENS

The Moose Jaw Warriors in partnership with McDonalds officially opened the Warriors/McDonalds Room in the Pediatrics Ward of the Moose Jaw Union Hospital today. Warriors’ players, staff and board members were on hand for the grand opening.

The Warriors Room was made possible by the “One Step at a Time” promotion put on by McDonalds last season. For every Big Mac sold on a Warriors home game, McDonalds donated one dollar to help renovate the room. With construction beginning in June, the room underwent complete renovations for the past 3 months.

New flooring was installed to resemble a hockey arena. Rink boards surround the room with brightly colored walls adding to the hockey rink theme. A giant wall mural was created containing a cheering crowd that doubles as an eye-spy game. The Warriors logo has been placed prominently on the windows. A coat rack and framed pictures, both made of hockey sticks, constructed and donated by Jason Moran complete the room. (Photo: Morty - Moose Jaw Warrior's - Mascot, first to use the room.)

At the Grand Opening, another announcement was made on behalf of the Warriors Alumni Association. Warriors Alumni Kent Hayes and Mike Keane donated $2,500 to the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Pediatrics Ward. Former Warrior Derek Kletzel was on hand to make the presentation. The donation will allow the Hospital Foundation to take one more step to improve the Pediatrics Ward.

A big thank you goes to McDonalds Owner/Operator Doug Douley, Moose Jaw Union Hospital Maintenance Staff and Kelly McEllree of the Moose Jaw Hospital Foundation for making the room a reality.

2008-2009 - THE "RAT" COMES HOME

Regina Pats President Russ Parker along with Pats General Manager Brent Parker announced that former Regina Pat Sniper Dale Derkatch has inked a three (3) year deal to become the new Head Coach of the Regina Pats. Terms of the contract were not released. The 43 year old Derkatch recently completed his fourth year as Director of Hockey Operations at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, at Wilcox, (approximately 35 miles south of Regina). He was also the Head Coach of the 2007-2008 Saskatchewan Midget AAA Champion Hounds. In 2006-2007 Dale was named the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Coach of the Year and led the Hounds to a Championship at the prestigious Mac's Midget Championship in that same year. Regarded by many as the greatest Pats player of all time Dale had his number 15 retired on March 13, 1999. Dale is the Pats career leader in numerous categories: Goals (222), Assists (269) and Points (491). Dale also holds Western Hockey League records for career play-off points (103), career play-off assists (73), most points in one play-off game (7) as well as the most points in one play-off year when he had a remark- able fifty three (53) points in the 1984 play-offs.

Derkatch was named the WHL Rookie of the year in 1982 and captured the WHL Scoring crown a year later during the 1983 season. A 7 th round selection of the Edmonton Oilers, Dale went on to play professionally in Europe for fourteen (14) season making stops in Finland, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. On Friday, September 5, 2008 - In the 91 year history of the Regina Pats, they have never seen the 3200 mark in season ticket sales, today they surpassed it. It beats the season ticket sales record set last season with 3126. This is just indicative of the support Pats fans have given the club over the pats 2 seasons, with and almost 20 per cent increase in attendance since the 2006-2007 season.

REGINA PATS - TRAINING CAMP - DAY FIVE

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots blog.

Training camp Day 5 - (good news, bad news for Pats) - By Greg Harder Tuesday, August, 25, 2009

The big story on Monday was the official signing of blue-chip prospects Chandler Stephenson and Tayler Balog. Both are slated to play in Tuesday’s Blue & White intrasquad game (7 p.m., Lumsden Arena). They’ll likely see some pre-season action as well before joining their respective midget AAA teams: The Tisdale Trojans (Balog) and Saskatoon Contacts (Stephenson). They’re eligible to play just five WHL games this season but can join the Pats on a full-time basis after their midget teams are done.

Here are some other notes from Monday:— It’s looking like G Linden Rowat and RW Brett Leffler may not be headed for NHL training camps after all. That would be a tough blow for the 20-year-olds, who attended summer development camps with the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks, respectively. It was thought those teams would extend an invitation to training camp but that no longer appears to be the case. Unless something changes, D Matt Delahey is now the only 20-year-old who could leave the Pats for a job in the pros. However, the fact that the New Jersey Devils still have a year to sign Delahey bodes well for Regina's chances of getting him back. Delahey, RW Garrett Mitchell (Washington), RW Jordan Eberle (Edmonton) and D Colten Teubert (L.A.) are now the lone members of the Pats who are assured of spots in NHL training camps.

— LW Jason Gardiner, an off-season acquisition from Tri-City, is slated to miss about 10 days with a hyper-extended knee. It was originally feared to be more serious. C Dominick Favreau is also out 10 days with a sprained knee. LW Graham Hood (thumb) is good to go and might play in the Blue & White game. Delahey (charleyhorse) is also coming along well but won’t play in the intrasquad game.

— With 52 players still in camp, there will be significant cuts following the Blue & White game. The contest will feature a mixture of veterans and hopefuls. Jordan Eberle and Colten Teubert are among the vets who may sit, unless head coach Curtis Hunt has a change of heart.

— Returning goalies Linden Rowat and Damien Ketlo are expected to get the night off. As a result, the four rookies in camp — Derek Tendler, Dawson Guhle, Cory Nygaard and Jesse Rogers — will all play. It’s an important audition for a player like Guhle, who has a chance to challenge for a job this season.

— Ex-Pats Jamie Heward and Garth Murray are expected to begin skating with the team this week in preparation for the upcoming NHL season. Heward, who may elect to retire and get into coaching, typically uses the time to improve his conditioning and lend a hand with the Pats. Watch for another Pats alumnus, Mike Sillinger, to do some work with the team this season in a yet-to-be defined consultant/coaching role, perhaps as a skills coach. Sillinger is expected to retire after 16 seasons in the NHL.

PATS SIGN TOP PROSPECT DUO -

Pats sign top prospects - by Greg Harder Monday, August, 24, 2009

We told you last week to watch for an imminent announcement about the signing of the Pats’ top two picks in this summer’s WHL bantam draft. Well, it’s a done deal.

'The Pats are holding a media gathering today at 4 p.m. to announce the signing of forwards Chandler Stephenson (first round, fifth overall) and Taylor Balog (second round, 28th overall). There were no recruiting issues with either player, each of whom has stated his desire to play for the Pats. Based on that fact, there wasn’t a great deal of urgency to get them committed before now.

Still, it’s an exciting day for the Pats' franchise and its future. Although both players still have plenty of work to do in terms of their development, there’s considerable optimism that they could represent the best one-two punch at the top of the draft that the Pats have had under the current regime.Stephenson and Balog have affirmed that belief with their performance so far in training camp. Stephenson is small but looks to be the complete package in terms of scoring, playmaking, defensive awareness and work ethic. Balog, who was originally projected as a possible top-five pick in the draft, may be the ideal complement to Stephenson — a big power forward who can skate well and has a nose for the net. It’ll be interesting to watch this duo grow together over the next four to five years.

Curtis Hunt is playing catchup.
Coming off a year in the Ottawa Senators' organization, Hunt is the first to admit he missed a lot in his brief time away from the WHL's Regina Pats. As a result, the veteran head coach has been busy renewing old acquaintances in training camp as well as making new ones.

"Everything is about relationships," offered Hunt. "They went through an experience (last season), as I did. For some of them it was a little bit of a breakout and some of them maybe not as favourable. It's nice to have that familiarity so you know names and faces and you have an idea. But when you lose a year in terms of seeing them develop, to continue the relationship, it makes things fresh on both sides."

There are just eight players on the roster who played under Hunt in 2007-08, mixed with a collection of newcomers and rookies. Hunt is somewhat familiar with last season's rookies -- including Jordan Weal -- since they were briefly in camp with him two years ago.

However, missing a year for players this age means you've missed a lot.

"You try as quickly as possible to get to know them, firstly just the names and after that what makes them tick as a player," added Hunt. "Some guys like a pat on the butt, some guys like a kick on the butt. It's important for (assistant coach) Shaun (Sutter) and myself to understand what they need for them to be their best. It's kinda the beginning stages (of the relationship)."

Two Oldest Pat Players Living In Regina – Pass Away

On Friday, September 28, the oldest living Regina Pat, Leonard Rae, passed away at the age of 97. Len was born in Wapella, Saskatchewan, in 1910. He played for the Pats when they won the Memorial Cup in 1930. In the first game, Leonard scored the clinching goal at 18:45 minute mark of the third period, scoring on his own rebound. Regina won the game 3-1 against the Toronto West End, going on to take the series in two straight games.

About one and a half months later, the second oldest Pat player to live in Regina, John Inglis, passed away on Thursday, November 15, at the age of 93. John was raised in Lumsden. John Inglis joined the Pats during the 1933-34 season. Before Inglis played for the Pats he was a goalie for the Lumsden Monarchs. Inglis said he was “...lucky in a way to become a Pat in 1933. Jimmy Franks was the Pat's goalie but he was over age that season. So they were in need of a new goalie.” As a goalie, Inglis had a few cuts and bruises since goalies in those days did not wear masks.

On Thursday, December 20, 2007, Lorne Davis, Ex-Pat player (1948-1953) and coach (1976-1978), passed away at the age of 77. He had been an NHL scout for 40 years, starting with St. Louis Blues in 1967 and ending with the Edmonton Oilers.

October 10, 2007, the WHL Board of Governors approved the sale of the Kamloops Blazers, after 23 years being a community own club. The club was bought by a private ownership group led by Vancouver businessman Tom Gaglardi and NHL players, Shan Doan, Jerome Iginla, Mark Recchi and Darryl Sydor.

Regina Pats have supplied the most players to the Canadian Junior International Hockey Team. When Defenceman, Logan Pyett, made the team this year, he became the 23 player.

The New Look Regina Pats had a total of eight new faces in the line up by the end of the trading deadline and it helped. From Saturday, December 27, to January 06, 2008, the Pats were involved in 6 games that were decided by just one goal.

On Saturday afternoon, February 9, 2008, at the Regina Brandt Centre, Regina Pats Alumni edged the Moose Jaw Warriors Alumni 3-2 in the Trans-Canada Clash. It was the second time the two clubs played against each other. Last year, in Moose Jaw, the Pats won in a wide open affair 10-9 on Kurt Wickenheiser's last minute goal.

A paid attendance of 5,657 saw both clubs put on a solid performance. It was fast skating, five solid body checks, plus sticks getting up high.

Moose Jaw Warriors took a 1-0 lead after the first period as Kevin Smyth beat Pats goalie Rod Houk at 8:19 on Theo Fleury's set up. Pats Darrin McKechnie tied the contest at 5:17 of the second period assisted by Frank Kovacs. Derek Kletzel gave Moose Jaw a 2-1 lead at 16:51 of the second period.

Regina Pats scored back-to-back goals in the third period. (Derek Eberle scored assisted by Kurt Wickenheiser, then came Brian Varga's winning goal at the mid point of the period.) The game was broadcast on CKRM . Two oldies, Kevin Gallant (Pat's announcer from 1980-1988) and Mal Isaac (1967-1974) called the play-by-play of the game.

On Saturday, February 9, 2008, at Regina Brandt Centre, the Regina Pats broke a franchise record playing in their 29th game where the contest was decided by one goal. The club went on to play in 35 games, winning 24 and losing 11.

At the second last game of the league schedule, on Friday, March 14, at the Brandt Centre, Dr. Ian Hill of the Regina Pats retired and was award the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League (WHL) Distinguished Service Award. Doctor Hill joined the Regina Pat in 1967.

The Eastern Conference's top eight play-off positions were not decided until the last game of the schedule. There was only an 11 points difference between first place Calgary Hitmen and the eighth place Moose Jaw Warriors. Regina Pats finished first with 44 wins and 94 points.

Eastern Division Quarter-Final - Friday, March 21, Regina Pats came out hitting right from the start of the opening whistle. At ten seconds, Brett Leffler gave a solid hit on Swift Current's Defenceman, Michael Wilson, and was sent to the Broncos dressing room never to return. Before 5,945 fans, Tim Krause scored the winner early in the second period to help the Regina Pats to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Swift Current Broncos at Brandt Centre. Pats took the lead at 7:17 of the first period as Colten Teubert scored on a feed out front pass. Broncos tied the game at 16:05 on Zac Smith's goal. Both Regina Pat's goals were scored on the Power Play. Krause scored on a rebound in front of the net. There was no scoring in the third. Pats out shot the Broncos 35-20.

Saturday, March 22, Swift Current scored three unanswered goals in the third period to skate to a 5-3 win over the Regina Pats and evened the series as 5,272 watched at Brandt Centre. Rookie Justin Dowling had a hat trick as he scored three goals for the Broncos. Regina's Ryan DePape opened the scoring on a deflected shot up under the bar at 3:29. Then Swift Current scored the next two goals; Justin Dowling off a Regina Pats Defenceman stick at 11:39, then his second goal at 17:59. Pats came right back on Matt Scrueby scoring on Jordan Ebele's rebound at 18:29 to tie the game at 2-2.

Pats took the lead in the second period on a power play goal by Jordan Eberle. Swift Current had gone 0 for 11 on power plays before they struck in the third period on a two man advantage as Zac Smith scored on a rebound. Justin Dowling scored his third goal at 8:26 as Pats defenceman Ryan Bender was trying to clear the puck away in front of the net, Dowling whacked at the puck and knocked it into the net. With a Pats major penalty Broncos scored at 19:48 into an open net.

Tuesday, March 25, Swift Current's Eric Felde's boarding penalty in overtime had Pats J.D. Watt score at 7:57 on a back hand goal to give the Regina Pats a 4-3 win in the presence of 2,659 fans. In the third period Regina's Kirt Hill scored at 8:36, tipping in Ryan Bender's point shot. Then Tim Kraus scored at 10:32 in a goal mouth scramble. Two minutes later, Swift Current tied the game as Keegan Dansereaux tapped in his own rebound to force the overtime. At the start of the first period Pats were being out shot 11-1 only to finish the game out shooting Swift Current 46-43.

Wednesday, March 26, Regina Pats led 3-1 after the first period, only to see 2,543 watch Swift Current come back and force a double overtime. Broncos Zac Smith scored at 7:37 of the second overtime to give Broncos a 5-4 win and tie the series at 2-2. Regina Logan Pyett snuck up from the point and accepted a pass from Scott Doucet at 6:13. About eight minutes later, Jordan Eberle scored Pats second power play goal as he picked up a loose puck. Thirty seconds later Dansereaux scored on a low shot as he was falling to the ice at 15:05. J.D. Watt put Pats up two goals when he scored from a tough angle at 17:49.

REGINA PATS TRAINING CAMP - DAY TWO

by Ron "Scoreboard" Johnston - I had a chance to take in the evening session of the Regina Pats Training Camp on Saturday. The first game had the Rookie Blue Team playing against the Red Team. The Blue Team came out the victors winning 8-4 with British Columbia's # 29 Devon Allenby scoring 3 of the goals, all in the first period. His line mate (Left Winger) Taylor Balog was another standout for the Rookies.

In the last minute of the 2nd period a little but tough guy, Logan Saworsky, took on Devon Allenby in a fight. Logan got in four good punches keeping his head down with a second a solid punch to Allenby's forehead.

There were approximately 100 fans who took in the evening sessions. The second game had the Veteran Red team playing against the Grey team.

(Photo: Left to Right: Shaun Sutter, Assistant Coach; Curtis Hunt, Head Coach; and Ryan Cyr, Goalie Consultant - taken by Ron "Scoreboard" Johnston)

The Red team won 4-1 over the Grey team. Tomas Hricina scored a goal from the left face-off circle on a rebound off the back boards. In the span of two minutes in the second period Linden Rowat let in two goals. With five minutes remaining Brett Leffler scored on a difficult shot, from the right corner boards to the upper left portion of the net. Then Mitch Czibere scored in front of the net to give the reds a comfortable lead.

The hardest body check of the game came from our new Draft Import Pick, Czech Republic Michel Poletin, a Left Wing 210 pounder, at the mid way point of the 2nd period when he made a hard body check into the boards on a Grey Team player. (Photo: Michel Poletin)

(Head Coach Curtis Hunt talking to the players prior to practice - Photo: taken by Roy Antal, Regina Leader Post)

The rookies duelled in a pair of high scoring affairs. Game one saw 2009 first round bantam pick Chandler Stephenson (Saskatoon, SK) score three timed in a 6-2 Team White win: Team White 6 – (Chandler Stephenson (3)/Cole Boychuk/Tyler Meuller/Michael Sagen) Team Blue 2 – (Devon Allenby/Tayler Balog)

Game two saw a complete reversal, with Team Blue rolling to the 8-4 win. Devon Allenby (Chilliwack, BC) picked up the hat trick and 2009 2nd round bantam pick Tayler Balog (Weyburn, SK) scored twice:Team Blue 8 – (Devon Allenby (3)/Tayler Balog (2)/Ryan Baskerville/Aiden Crowther/Bryn McNabb)Team White 4 – (Joel Harnden (2)/Michael Benson/Chandler Stephenson)

The veterans played things a little tighter with Team Red and Team Grey splitting their games. Game one saw Devan McLean (Rosedale, BC) scoring twice for the 3-1 Team Grey win:Team Grey 3 – (Devan McLean (2)/Lucas Froese)Team Red 1 – (Michal Poletin)
Team Red bounced back in the late game, as Mitch Czibere (Ft.Sask. AB) scored twice for the 4-2 win.Team Red 4 – (Mitch Czibere (2)/Brandon Davidson/Brett Leffler)Team Grey 2 – (Koltyn Miller/Tomas Hricina)

There have been a pair of injuries at camp, both involve veterans: D – Matt Delahey – Charley Horse (Day-to-Day) C – Jason Gardiner – Knee (Indefinite)\

It was a late night for the hockey staff as well, as the first cuts came down, with these players getting reassigned to their respective minor hockey clubs: Devon McLean, Roger Tagoona, Jordan Daniels, Brian Cochran,Tyler O’Connell, Dylan MacNab, Zach Wildman, Justin Christian, Myles Dunne, Kelby Lang, Jeff Froese, Devon Audette, Bryn MacNab, Max Faulkner, Brennan Frykas, Mackenzie Johnson, Tyler Bell, Michael Brown, Colton Laroque, Colton Pankiw, Tyler Boyer, Jack Rodewald, Michael Benson, Logan Sawarski, Cole Boychuk, Spencer Schoen, Darrin Robinson, Levi Schwab,Taran Kozun, Evan Zdunich

Sitting beside Kevin throught out the evening session this was part of what he had to say:

Chandler Stephenson is as advertised..... small-ish, fast, can stickhandle, has a wicked shot and can play defence.... he was everywhere for all 3 scrimmages. Tayler Balog is a big power forward that has a real nose for the net has pretty decent touch, can skate and can hit. Dyson Stevenson is one of those players that I really don't know what to say about him other than I like him.... I think he could be and should be a WHLer one day.

Ryan Baskerville is a big bodied power forward that can bang and crash with the best of them (the rooks) and seems to have a little touch around the net too. Aidan Crowther is another fairly big bodied power forward type.... very similar to Baskerville. Joel Harnden never really stood out to me much but any time I noticed him he was taking the puck one-on-one with a d-man and finding ways around them and can score. The theme seems to be bang and crash type players for the rookies and it continues on with Devon Allenby.... For the first 2 scrimmages I noticed him hitting and skating and hitting some more; then what seemed to be out of nowhere he sniped and sniped and sniped (had 5 points [4g-1a I believe] in the 8-4 win).

Dayton Reinboldt, Michael Benson, Garrett Lockeridge and Logan Saworski are all crash and bang energy type players. One last player I will mention is Matthew Hildebrandt..... I really enjoy his style.... he has really good speed, seems like he could be the "greasy" type player that could be part agitator, speedster and eventually a goal scorer.

Thanks Kevin.
