World Juniors commence

After months of hype, anticipation and even skepticism, the puck officially drops today on the 2010 world junior hockey championship in Regina and Saskatoon. The tournament is back in Saskatchewan after a 19-year absence, marking the first time that the crown jewel of junior hockey has returned to a previous site.

The event is already a financial success based upon over $13 million in ticket revenue so far, making it the second-highest grossing tournament in world junior history. Although ticket sales took a while to gain momentum, both cities have enjoyed a late push, with Regina sitting over 80 per cent sold out and Saskatoon more than 85 per cent.
