2008-2009 - THE "RAT" COMES HOME

Regina Pats President Russ Parker along with Pats General Manager Brent Parker announced that former Regina Pat Sniper Dale Derkatch has inked a three (3) year deal to become the new Head Coach of the Regina Pats. Terms of the contract were not released. The 43 year old Derkatch recently completed his fourth year as Director of Hockey Operations at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, at Wilcox, (approximately 35 miles south of Regina). He was also the Head Coach of the 2007-2008 Saskatchewan Midget AAA Champion Hounds. In 2006-2007 Dale was named the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Coach of the Year and led the Hounds to a Championship at the prestigious Mac's Midget Championship in that same year. Regarded by many as the greatest Pats player of all time Dale had his number 15 retired on March 13, 1999. Dale is the Pats career leader in numerous categories: Goals (222), Assists (269) and Points (491). Dale also holds Western Hockey League records for career play-off points (103), career play-off assists (73), most points in one play-off game (7) as well as the most points in one play-off year when he had a remark- able fifty three (53) points in the 1984 play-offs.

Derkatch was named the WHL Rookie of the year in 1982 and captured the WHL Scoring crown a year later during the 1983 season. A 7 th round selection of the Edmonton Oilers, Dale went on to play professionally in Europe for fourteen (14) season making stops in Finland, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. After finishing his playing career Dale returned to Regina and joined the Washington Capitals where he worked as an amateur scout for six (6) years.

On Friday, September 5, 2008 - In the 91 year history of the Regina Pats, they have never seen the 3200 mark in season ticket sales, today they surpassed it. It beats the season ticket sales record set last season with 3126. This is just indicative of the support Pats fans have given the club over the pats 2 seasons, with and almost 20 per cent increase in attendance since the 2006-2007 season.

The Regina Pats got of to a great start, after the first month. They were fighting for first place only to see the club slip badly. It started when five of their top players had to leave the club for International play. Forward, Jordan Eberle, Defenceman, Colten Teubert, with the Canadian IIHF under 20 World Tournament, along with Forward Rudolf Cerveny of the Czech Republic at Ottawa. The other two were Forwards: Jorden Weal (Pacific) and Dominick Favreau (West) in the under 17 World Junior Tournament.

It was a great moment for Regina Pat's Jordan Eberle, as he became a star overnight when he scored the tying goal with only 5.4 seconds remaining in the semi-final game against Russia, then scoring the winner in the shoot out. In the Gold Medal game against Sweden (5-1) Eberle scored a goal and had two assists. At the end of the season, Jordan Eberle had taken seven of the Regina Pats Awards. By Christmas break the Regina Pats were in 3rd place in the Eastern Division and 4th in the Eastern Conference. With the return of the five, Pats had slipped to 7th in the Eastern Conference. At the end of the League Schedule they were in 10th place with 60 points and out of the play-offs.
